Is it time to give Fred a contract extension?

I've been thinking about this for awhile but with the recent Trail Blazers speculation, I believe it's time to give Fred big time salary bump from his first money friendly contract. I think he's proven over the past two years that he can coach and recruit well enough to have sustained success at the division 1 level. Not that I think money would be the deciding factor that makes Fred take another job but he should be rewarded for last seasons success.

If not this year, then definitely next season. A good rule of thumb is that if pro teams (or major colleges) are legitimately interested in your coach, you should probably think about paying them more, IMO.

Re: Is it time to give Fred a contract extension?

Yeah, I think he signed for 5 years. Generally I think you like to have at least 4 years on the contract so you can recruit.

And we got him at a bargain basement price and time commitment. Most of the new hires in the major conferences this year are in the $1.2-$1.5 million range for 7ish years. Hell, Illinois was going to give Shaka $2.5. 2 years ago, McDermott got over a million for 10 years. He should probably be in the million dollar range. And maybe a bump up for his assistants as well.

    I'm not opposed to it.

just out of curiosity, how much money was brought into the athletic dept. from this season compared to a few years ago when we were only winning 15 games per year or so...?

This would be interesting to see.

Also, if I'm Fred and my goal is to get more money (hypothetically) I would probably rather coach next year and get an extension after that since I have a pretty talented team that is poised to make another NCAA tourney. That can only increase the value of any extension he would receive.

We need to bump it up so that he is making more than Fran.

If we have a winning season next year, we should offer him more $$$$$$

I don't really care what about what Fran makes but we should bump it to at least the middle of the pack for Big XII coaches. He makes 800K right now, doesn't he? I'd bump it up to 1.5.

LOL actually it's kind of funny to think that Iowa might be overpaying for someone and wasting their money, making their program just a litttttle worse because they don't have as much money.

Still paying Lickliter as well. This year Lickliter was like the 3rd highest paid state employee behind KF and CPR.

I think we could wait a year and pay him what he's worth then. Wouldn't be opposed to giving the man a raise now, though.

ADJP will do what it takes to keep him here, so I'm not worried either way.

I would give him a life time contract. I really want to see this years recruiting class all play as seniors.
