Trustworthy Auto Mechanics in Urbandale area

My daughter called, saying the "check engine" light came on in her vehicle (Pontiac GrandAm). Now, it was close to 100,000 miles, and I know I've had trucks that have the "check EGR" light come on at a certain high mileage. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet, but if something is wrong, I'm looking for a reliable and reasonable mechanic. Anyone with suggestions?

Re: Trustworthy Auto Mechanics in Urbandale area

Most autoparts stores have a code reader. Tell her to go there and ask if one of them would check the code on the vehicle. They could then tell her/you what the code is what the possibilities are that could be causing it. Could be as simple as an O2 sensor that tripped up with the sudden humidity we have had the past few days. Or if it's something that requires a mechanic then take what they tell you and talk to the local guys in your area that you trust so you have an idea what it is before you take it in somewhere. Acting like you know what is going on makes it less likely you will get the shaft from some rip off artist that are more than common in the area. Stay away from Tuffy's and CarX because I have heard many horror stories about them.

There is an Autozone on Douglas east of 86th street and I know they will retrieve codes for free. I would give that a shot first of all.

Hickman Auto on the corner of hickman/merle hay is a good honest shop. Old school people that will tell it to you straight. They'll even break it down for you and tell the stuff you can do thats necessary, and the stuff you could do thats not necessary.

I've gone to these guys for years. Very trustworthy, in my opinion, and their prices always seem very reasonable.

Re: Trustworthy Auto Mechanics in Urbandale area

Thank you guys for your suggestions, and warnings. To follow up, my daughter took the car to AutoZone as CyclonesRule suggested, and the only thing that came up was emissions problem. The gentleman checked her gas cap, and its not sealing properly. Thanks again to all for your help.

So what did that set you back for not putting the gas cap back on properly?

Sheesh...almost a page without "this thread is useless without pics". We're slipping in the off-season.
