Coaches praising the opponent before a game

What is the most you've ever heard a coach praise an opponent before a game?? I came across this AP article within the Oklahoma SID handout from 1987. I'm not posting this to bag on Walden but I did find it pretty funny. One thing is that we only had 51 scholarship players that year (according to this handout).

Damn Walden, that is brutal. I was only six at the time, and I don't think I even knew Iowa State University existed then, but that had to be a depressing time to be a fan of Cyclone football.

I had season tickets, student prices thank god. But it did turn me into an 18 year-old alkie during football season.

Re: Coaches praising the opponent before a game

If I remember right, Criner put the mvp players in the red helmets. Wanted to make sure they stood out to the opponent to make it easier.

The 50some schollys is what Walden had to contend with during his whole tenure here. I believe 87 was his first year. Between the sanctions and AD not wanting to spend money, this is the number he had to work with. This is why I don't blame him for the condition that ISU football was in during the 90s. He was put in an impossible position. Not saying he was a good coach, but he wasn't a bumbling fool like some people try to make him out to be.

Thanks for clarifying. It is difficult to remember things I tried to forget.

I think the worst pregame coachspeak I ever heard live was from Eustachy when he referred to some team with like a 1-9 record as "the best one win team in the country". Lol, c'mon Larry.

No, I think you had it right!! The red helmets were the "awards" helmets. I'll see if I can find some kind of printout that tells how the helmets were awarded.

    56-3. Yikes.

1987 Oklahoma at Iowa State Football Box Score - SoonerStats.com

And you're right, I think it's silly when coaches pump sunshine about their opponents. But to say that the team has literally no chance to win? To say that Oklahoma can name their score before the game is even played? How are the players going to even compete if that's what the head coach is telling them?

In a 1983 newspaper article, Criner said, 'By providing a different-colored helmet, you won't see running backs and wide receivers with 10,000 decals on their helmets and some ol' offensive and defensive linemen, who do the majority of the work, with nothing on their helmets.' According to the 1985 ISU football media guide, 'Yes, using two different-colored helmets is legal. The players simply are required to wear matching jerseys.'
