Could he have done worse without trying? Just asking. McD could never win more than 15 games in a season so I always wondered if McD just sat on the bench we could have done as well.

There is no reason to delay the inevitable. He would have to win the Big 12 and finish top 5 at NCAAs next year to make up for the last two inexcusable years, and I don't think anyone believes that is going to happen.

I just love how everyone that calls for his head has no idea what building a team takes these days, they just want immediate results. So glad you guys dont run a university cause u would be the laughing stock of the nation. Any trouble and u fire your coach. Good strategies u morons.

Agreed, but just a couple of comments. First of all, I know Cael stripped us of a couple of years of recruits, and second, injuries hurt us this year. It does look like he has some decent recruits coming, but KJ needs to change. The team needs to be taught a much more aggressive style - Iowa, PSU, Cornell - those guys come at you, non-stop. We seem to like the edge of the mat and low scoring matches. My brother, who wrestled back in Jackson's era, calls him "No Action Jackson" as he seemed to like the low scoring bouts, but he had so much talent, he could make it work.

I'm all for giving coach another year, but he and the whole team need to significantly imporove.

Re: ***Official Give KJ One More Year Thread***

I think KJ should get next year to see what his recruits can do. He is a smart guy and should be upgrading his staff at the low weights as that really killed us. He also needs to look at the injury situation and figure out what to do with our S&C program.

As for "no action Jackson" that could be true, I don't know, but he currently pushes an aggressive style a la Jon Reader.

I like KJ and hope it turns around for him and the wrestlers, but if next year there is no improvement I don't think JP will have any choice but to make a move.

I think anyone that follows our program knows KJ needs to change some things with this program.

    From the Gazette, K.J. Pilcher:

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Well, turns out Bobby Douglas was right.
The former Iowa State head coach had his thumb on the pulse of the wrestling program when it transitioned from former head coach Cael Sanderson to current coach Kevin Jackson three years ago.
“When I first got there, Coach Douglas told me it would take four years to rebuild the program,” Jackson said. “I really didn’t believe him.
“I’m an optimist and when I look at some of the kids we have in our program and some of the kids we brought in as true freshmen I thought pretty good about what we were going to be able to do over the next couple years, even though we did have a freshman dominated team.”
The descent continued during the 2012 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on Friday at the Scottrade Center. The Cyclones had 4 of 5 qualifiers eliminated before Friday night and were in danger of not having at least one All-American for the first time since 1962.
Third-seeded senior 165-pounder Andrew Sorenson reached the quarterfinals, but lost to Lehigh’s Brandon Hatchett, 7-3, and still needed a win to reach the top eight.
“It’s a tough tournament,” Jackson said. “Obviously, we’re disappointed. It’s got to get better. We have a lot of work to do this summer.”
Before Sorenson’s consolation match Friday night, the Cyclones were 6-9 in the tournament. Heavyweight Matthew Gibson was a win short of the round of 12 with freshmen Ryak Finch (125) and Luke Goettl (141) manage a consolation win before being eliminated.

The goals may not have been high enough.
Shoot for the penthouse or you will end up in the outhouse.
“Guys that try to win a national championship or expect to win a national championship become All-Americans,” Jackson said. “If you plan to be an All-American, you’ll fall short. That was the case for a couple of us just wanting to be All-Americans as opposed to really making a bid for that national championship.”
Jackson was willing to fall on the sword and take some responsibility for the NCAA disappointment. He said that the team needs to increase its maturity level, applying it to all aspects of life that affect their results.
The Cyclones have endured some turnover on its roster with some wrestlers and recruits following Sanderson to Penn State and casualties to injury and non-athletic reasons. The Cyclones have strong recruiting class coming in next year, including Des Moines Roosevelt four-time state champion John Meeks, Iowa City West state champ Dakota Bauer and highly-touted Destin McCauley.
Jackson will look to infuse new talent while developing the returners, including NCAA qualifiers Finch, Goettl, Gibson and 184-pounder Boaz Beard. Junior Chris Spangler (174) qualified but couldn’t compete due to effects from a concussion.
“We’re going to continue to improve and get better,” Jackson said. “We’re going to continue to add pieces to the puzzle.”
