Former coach and player with ISU ties having big season.

Some big things going on this year for the Wayne State College (Wayne, NE) women's basketball team. At 32-2 the team has qualified for the NCAA Division II Elite Eight next week in San Antonio, Texas for the first time in school history.

Leading the team is fourth-year head coach Chris Kielsmeier. Kielsmeier is an ISU grad and was a student assistant under Fennelly I think around 1999. He spent eight years as the head coach at Division III Howard Payne University in Brownland, TX and won a Division III national championship there in 2008.

The best player on his team is a Division II All-American in senior Ashley Arlen from Cascade, Iowa. She spent her freshman year at ISU and played in a lot of games but she decided to transfer and ended up at Wayne State.

Wayne State is currently ranked #1 in the country in Division II and I think is the favorite to win the national championship.

Let's cheer for these former Cyclones.

Arlen in Div. II is like a woman amongst girls. If she had been able to handle the flying, she might have been All-Big 12 by now. Would have loved to see her and Pop inside together.

Agree, RoyalClone; in fact, of all the players over the past few years who have left for one reason or another, Arlen was the biggest loss, imho.

I've seen her play a couple of times for Wayne as I've got relation that goes to school at Augustana who have played against her.

What was her reasoning for leaving ISU anyway?

I agree. What's the deal on flying, I've not heard that one before?

The talk was she didn't like to fly, and this was a part of her decision to leave.

Long drive to San Antonio for her. Hope she has plenty of honey buns.

We seem to attract those who don't like flying. Eustachy, Arlen, and now Royce. Then again, maybe it's just our fair share. I don't know the stats on the fear of flying. I feel for those who have to deal with it, and am thankful I don't.

    Yep, flying.

I think her freshman year was the year ISU was in Hawaii for a holiday tournament. Clone Zone had a feature on the trip (IIRC, Denae was the "correspondant" that year), and the women were talking about it.
