    Why have the "First Four"

I am confused why the NCAA needs this. Most bracket challenges don't even require you to pick these games, really takes some of the fun away from the brackets IMO.

I guess it is just a way to grab a little more money from the TV revenue, fans, ect.

Re: Why have the "First Four"

Go back about 15 years ago when the WAC split in two and the MWC was formed as a result. Instead of the power conferences giving up a "precious" at-large bid, they created the 65th team, forcing the two worst 16 seeds to play each other. Fast forward a number of years, including a number of debates about whether it should be 16 seeds or last at-large teams in, and you now have four "first round" games.

To simplify this, someone, probably from Dayton, convinced the powers-that-be that more mediocre basketball on Tuesday and Wednesday of the first week is better than no basketball at all until Thursday.

Re: Why have the "First Four"

I just hate how the bracket games dont have you pick these games. In my view matchups can be very different depending who wins, and it kind of deters me from moving these teams on further than the 1st round.

I like it though, four more slots for isu to grab if we ever end up back on the bubble.

True, but honestly, the bracket contests are what makes the tournament what it is. Money wise, and entertainment wise.

Re: Why have the "First Four"

For the last four at-large teams, it makes sense to me. Let them play their way in.

For the conference champs, it just strips away their reward for the season they put up. "Congrats. Here's another mid-major, just like you played all conference season." Sure, the odds are almost completely insurmountable against a Kentucky or North Carolina for these 16 seeds, but at least they got their one shot .

Re: Why have the "First Four"

I could only imagine 95% of fans agree... women's basketball and volleyball seem to do fine with "only 64" in the field, and it is not like a "just inside the bubble" team is really a threat to do much of anything.

I wish they would just go back to 64 teams and be done with it.

I agree with you, but people will argue VCU. You need to prove you belong in the tournament, not that you're capable of making a run if you get in.

the only thing that annoys me is that they call it the first round, for some reason it bugs the heck out of me. They should just call them play in games.
