    Fred's NCAA History

The media keeps talking about UConn-Kentucky, and their history. I thought that Fred and company played against them in the second round way back when. I'm pretty sure Rick Pitino was Kentucky's coach, and Johnny was ISU's.

If I remember right, Johnny kept getting on the refs about Pitino leaving the coaches box, so they T'ed Johnny up for leaving it himself. We lost, like 104-102 or some fairly close score, and I think UK went on to win the championship.

If I'm remembering it wrong, I'd love to hear a clarification. I'm getting old and senile.

Padgett played for Kentucky, they lost to duke one the shot by Christian Laetner. I think it was 92. Kentucky beat us on a similar last shot.

If it's the game I'm thinking of, it was something like 104-96, and Thigpen and Bayless both went for 30 or so. It was a tremendous game, as we weren't predicted to hang with them at all.

It was the 2nd round of the tourney in 1992. We lost to Kentucky 106-98. They were a 2 seed and we were a 10.

Kentucky went on to lose to Duke in the Elite Eight on the famous Christian Laettner buzzer beater, 104-103.

    Re: Fred's NCAA History

    From everyone's favorite Wikipedia (LINK):

Iowa State's fortunes improved during the 1991-92 season, with the Cyclones finishing 21-13 overall (5-9 in conference play) and earning the No. 10 seed in the East Region of the NCAA Tournament. The Cyclones defeated No. 7 seed UNC-Charlotte in the opening round before losing 106-98 to the No. 2 seed Kentucky Wildcats in the round of 32. Iowa State recorded wins over #16 Iowa, #21 Oklahoma, #2 Oklahoma State, #3 Kansas, and #13 Missouri during the regular season. Junior Justus Thigpen led the team with 16.3 points per game, while junior Ron Bayless averaged 12.6 points per game. Freshmen Julius Michalik and Fred Hoiberg averaged 13.6 and 12.1 points per game, respectively.
Score was 98 to 106, it looks like:

That is the only time we've played Kentucky since 1980.

That's a nice story, too bad it didn't happen. Clones were down 8 at half, Kentucky kept us at arms length most of the game. Made a run to get to about 4 at one point. But there was no late game shot. Link below. Bayless and Thigpen were big.

Working from a 41 yr old memory...Kentucky did have a long inbound pass to Padgett for a shot late in the game against us...the score may not have been as close as I remembered, but when laetner hit his shot against them, I was happy.
