That's great for Sage. That means he'll have at least 13 years in the NFL, most of which are spent as the #2 QB. That's one incredible gig. He's set for life.

Sage has one of the best jobs in the world. Back-up QBs get paid, but don't get beat up by the opposing team or their fans. And their longevity may surpass a kicker's.

Not that I'm not happy for the guy, but how in the hell does he keep landing new contracts?

He's been a starter for 5 different teams. His knowledge of NFL offenses and defenses is far beyond the other QB's who are fighting for jobs. He's a valuable insurance policy for a team.

I still think if he just had had the right timing with a good team, he'd be a starter. Everytime he has started it seems he's lacked talent around him.

There was a 'helicopter' incident though.

Very doubtful. If after 12 years in the NFL, he's still never been handed the reins, there's a reason for it. There's been plenty of time for him to be evaluated. I like Sage as much as the next guy, but he's a career backup, which is nothing to be ashamed of.

If Trent Green had never gotten hurt, I bet we would be saying the same thing about Kurt Warner.

I agree. If he could have gotten the starting role for one full season, I think he would have proven to be a good, if not great, NFL starter.

Yeah but he hasn't played in like 5 years.

I agree. I will also tag on to this. I also think there are reasons he has stuck so long as a backup.

Ever notice that some players who are "more talented" but don't quite make it as a starter don't seem to stick for very long as a back-up? I believe there are certain attributes that are somewhat unique to being a successful back up such as the physical and mental ability to be prepared for a game with limited practice; the ability to warm up quickly and enter the game on short notice physically and mentally prepared and the ability to contribute as a quasi-coach while still being a player (a good back-up should be finding little ways to help the starter be better, more prepared and making adjustments on the fly in practice and in games).

Kurt Warner was a lot younger than Sage is when he got his break, and had not had 12 years of NFL evaluation. He'd spent a very small amount of time with Green Bay, and that was it, prior to St. Louis. Sage, on the other hand, has been in front of NFL coaches for his entire career.

If you're holding out hope that Sage is going to have a breakout year, you're setting yourself up to be disappointed.
