attendance tumbles article in USAToday -Pollard quotes

I couldn't find that this was previously posted. Has some Pollard quotes from 3/8. If it was previously posted, please delete thread.

At Iowa State, athletic director Jamie Pollard says, fewer than half the allotment of 2,500 student tickets typically is used, compared with 80% of the non-student tickets sold. "We've met with student groups and talked through it," Pollard says. "And the gist of what we get out of it is that that demographic has changed. They've grown up in a different environment. It's more quick-hitting — 'I can get it digital, I can get the highlights, I don't have to watch the game, I've got a lot of other things I can do.' "
Pollard sees it not only as a concern for today, but one that could shake the very foundation of college basketball in the coming decades.
"I don't have a solution, but it's something we all have to be aware of," he says. "Because when that demographic becomes the 40- to 60-year-old demographic, are they going to do what the current 40- to 60-year-old demographic does, which is buy tickets and make donations? I'm not certain we can say they will."

I think they are spoiled being in Ames and take it for granted. They'll wish they went to more.

Any fan that doesn't want to go see a team play in person is not a fan...you cannot get that experience from a TV or highlights.

I agree. But in the age of big HD tvs, that gap is closing a bit. I think if college arenas began serving beer, that would definitely help. Dont underestimate the power of beer.

An $8 beer isn't a great selling point for getting college students in the door.

And I think this just means you old people can't die. Don't die, attendance doesn't fall. Easy.

This does have the potential to be a long-term problem.

Hopefully, more winning helps to solve the problem. Or something attracts the younger generation back to basketball.

HAHA, Beer does help. I went to every game as a student, and even made it to the first Big 12 games during breaks. Also was lucky to go to the NCAA first and second round games in Minneapolis in 2000. Great experiences...nothing like Hilton when it is jam packed and the Clones are rolling.

The sport in general is way down compared to how it was in the past. That's part of the problem.

The X Box Generation strikes again. Same with bowling. Same with golf. Same with other sports. Why go watch when you can play for free on xbox. Discuss.

Then don't charge $8 for a beer, problem solved. These aren't NFL games we are talking about, there is no conceivable reason why a draft would cost that much in Ames.

Re: attendance tumbles article in USAToday -Pollard quotes

I do enjoy watching games on TV. Just having instant replays and stuff like that always seemed to improve my viewing capabilities. All it takes is getting those people into a close game where the emotion and atmosphere are unmatchable. Iowa State has that experience that you don't get when watching on TV. As far as the "I can watch the highlights" I don't know how you can call yourself a fan let alone a "Cyclone". That jimlad was needed for that blog that was posted in previous days on ISU fandom. I love going to games and would rather be there. That being said, when I am at games I find myself texting friends or family asking how replays looked and if the correct call was made. My living room doesn't compare to Hilton or the Jack though, and people with this mentality I feel sorry for. There is no better sporting experience for me than in person Cyclone sports.
