Live and Die by The Three

This phrase makes me want to vomit. No ****. We are a 3 pt shooting team. Everyone makes it seem like shooting 3s is an inferior way to win games. "Sure ISU was 3rd in the big 12 but they live and die by the 3"-Some idiot.

OpWho gives a ****. The 3pt line is part of the game. With our team, it would be a disservice not to shoot 3s. I hear this all the time, especially on local radio.

I want to refer back to khall53's article about shooting 3s. We are good at shooting 3s. Nobody says "KU lives and dies by Robinsons post up moves." It's old school, underhanded free throw BS. It would be stupid not to take as many 3s as we do.

Maybe im just drunk, and I can accept that.

Re: Live and Die by The Three

I think it's like pass-first offenses in football. It's high risk high reward. I don't think anyone is saying it's inferior. I think they're simply pointing out the near-fact that 3-pt shooting makes you susceptible to some inexplicable losses but also some big upsets.

We've seen both sides of that this season.

Even in shoot around, with no defense you won't make all your 3's. It's just inherently more risky.

Why does the statement "live and die by the 3" make us sound inferior? Maybe the phrase is overused, but hardly in a degrading manner.

Re: Live and Die by The Three

I noticed that we shoot a very similar overall percentage to UConn, but do so with a ton of our shots coming from long range (and out shoot the Huskies 38% to 33% from long distance). Advantage: ISU.

But I agree, it's not like it matters. Everyone has to put the ball in the hoop somehow. This team has shown that it can score in other ways when it has to. It's not like the team buried KU, Baylor and K State twice solely based on shooting awesome percentages from 3. They did it by outworking the opponents and getting points however they could.

    To quantify this, our eFG% is 52.9% (38th), UConn's is 50.2% (125th)

Re: Live and Die by The Three

Like it or not, ISU has lived or died from the 3 point line. Look at the really poor percentage of 3 point shots ISU shot at Baylor, or at MU. That is just what ISU brings to the table. For some reason Melvin seems to be the only guy on the team that can make a mid range jumper. For the most part the plan has worked well, but if ISU goes 5 for 22 from the arc, chances are they lost.

Scott can hit that runner in the lane or the jump shot. And White down low is very versatile. I don't think ISU lives and dies by the three, although they have in recent years. This year they have a few things they can rely on but the three is a very heavy part of the offensive game plan.

We might live by the three but I would say we die by the quick guards blowing past us.

Re: Live and Die by The Three

I think the point is that it is almost universally true that you'll run across this counter to a comment about a good team or good offense that is a high volume 3-point shooting team, "Yeah, but all they do is shoot 3's".

Ok, is that outside the rules...?

Some teams live and die by shooting inside the arc. Others by the foul trouble of their best players. Some live and die by their depth. Any team that has a profound weakness or one profound strength will "live and die" by it.

Yet, for some reason, that label is reserved for three-point shooting. Note, that ISU has done a hell of a lot more living by it than dying by it.

Re: Live and Die by The Three

We do live and die by the three for the most part. It's who we are, good and bad. As another poster mentioned, it's no different then having an identity in football as a team that throws it 70% of the time. It is what it is and you can win with it or lose with it.

Hopefully we get HOT AS HELL during the tourney and win with it.

Re: Live and Die by The Three

Well I agree that shooting 3's is a very high risk and high reward venture and at ISU we definitely Live and Die by the 3, or put it this way ...

At Iowa State We Win and Lose by the 3.....

Just let me say that..............I have NO problem with Living and Dying with the three pt shot at all....

Here's hoping & Praying that the three's are a "Dropping" come thursday evening at 8:30pm....

Lets Go Cyclones ... Beat Both UConn & Kentucky in Looavull...

Re: Live and Die by The Three

The key to our three point game is passing. We need to make that extra pass for the wide open three. If UConn is weak in defending the three, that is the way to make them pay for it.

3pt% is more random from game-to-game than 2pt%, so the phrase is fitting.

I'm pretty excited to watch ISU launch 50 threes against Kentucky, actually.

    Right there.

Texas just showed the world the path to beat us.

Even with that, if we do reasonably well at containing that and holding down our overall #1 problem which is giveaway turnovers, we'll come out on top.
