    Does radiation scare you?

I found it funny that there's a big push to stop the building of a nuclear power plant at the state capitol this week at the same time that we are being bombarded by x-rays and gamma radiation from the solar flare.

What worries you more about radiation: a nuclear reactor or flying?

Eh, neither. I believe the power plant in Japan was a fairly old model. Even then, it was hit by a double whammy. If we are going to meet our power needs in a safe and sustainable way, it has to include nuclear.

our pastor's husband was an x-ray tech for some service branch starting in the 60s? He had to have surgery and is now in a wheelchair (he is also a pastor now).

I dont generally have a fear of radiation, but If I worked around it, I would have a nagging in the back of my head that I might have a problem if exposed for a long period of time.

We just need to figure out how to use Thorium reactors, then we would have the energy problems all solved.

    Re: Does radiation scare you?

I wouldn't say as a threat, nuclear power really scares me, but when things go bad, just ask Japan how much they like nuclear reactors now. I know I know, everyone has excuses why it couldn't happen here, and believe me, I'm with you, it's cheap "clean" power, but the Titanic was unsinkable at one time as well.

Personally, I still like nuclear power, but it is still far from foolproof. Plus, people love to be scared by the topic at hand. Just like the guy who was out having a smoke at work today while I was out enjoying the weather. As a guy on a Harley drives by, he looks at me, smoke in hand, and says, "Man, I'd love to have a bike, but those things are deathtraps."

Agreed with this. Not so sure about midamerican's plan for paying for the plant, but ultimately nuclear is something we need to use more of. If an earthquake and tsunami manage to hit here, we're probably ****ed anyway, whats a little radiation at that point?

The Japanese plant was built in the 70s and required backup power to provide continued cooling to the core. The latest design (ap1000by Westinghouse) is designed intrinsically safe so that sufficient cooling water can be delivered without any power. We tested their safety cooling valves in marshalltown a couple years ago and proved it will work. All components are being designed to withstand twice the seismic load that Fukushima was.

    Re: Does radiation scare you?

No radiation doesn't scare me. I'm also around it quite often as part of my graduate work (I work with x-ray inspections at CNDE at ISU). Granted I'm always around tube sources rather than isotope (i.e., I'm always around an "off" switch), but I've gone through enough safety training to appreciate that common-sense will go along ways towards safety.

    Re: Does radiation scare you?

There was a lot of fear here in the Omaha area during the floods last year(there is a nuclear power plant on the river). Of course if you did any reading on it you would have learned that the river would have had to double in height in order to do anything to the plant.

I blame lazy media, if you have people scared they are more likely to read/watch the news.

Within two months all nuclear reactors will be shut down in Japan or 25% of their supply. They had to crank up old junk to get their enrgy - LNG from Russia, coal, old dams. The plant survived the earthquake and tsunami, but the generators failed. One unit almost melted down and they used lead plated helicopters to supply water for coolant. The winds luckily blew out to sea after four days of blowing inland before the earthquake.
