Re: So you won a million dollars

situations like this are just another indicator that the best way to solve our nation's budget crisis is not raising taxes, nor do we have to go through a major cut to entitlements. I truly believe there is enough waste at all levels of government that if dealt with would substantially reduce, if not resolve, the budget shortfall.

Reading these kind of stories just pisses me off. This lady should have to pay back, with interest & penalties, all the money she stole from the tax payers. Yes, I consider what she did as stealing!

    This.

What I am thinking (makes me even more upset) is that this is definately not a unique story. Probably just because she won the lottery is why there is publicity behind it. I would be willing to bet that there are hundreds, maybe thousands of people who are sitting on say a large inheritance from a wealthy family member and are doing the same thing.

I think there was a line in the Movie "Big Daddy" about how he filed for SSI at the age of 25 or something and he wasn't rich, but had a large settlement from a lawsuit, so $ was not a problem for him. Sounds pretty funny in a movie, but very upsetting if were to happen in real life. Just ****** me off.

    End rant.

Anyone see that HBO documentary about lottery winners? It's can end up being more of a curse than anything for a lot of people, because they just go crazy with the winnings, blow it on a bunch of stupid ****, and then have inverstments that keep piling up debt that they aren't able to pay off.

I mean, it's nice that states are able to fund a lot of public works projects through the lottery. But they should take some of those profits and provide financial literacy classes for lottery winners.

That was kind of the point in changing the terminology and perception. It's working out great! When people used to feel uncomfortable accepting assistance, the system worked as designed- you use it if you must to get through a rough spot, and you go back to supporting yourself. Without a stigma attached, there are some who will ride it for all it's worth (though some would even with the stigma attached, but far less, I'd wager).

Re: So you won a million dollars

This story reminds me of an email I received recently:

    An interesting analogy

The food stamp program, part of the Department of Agriculture, is pleased to be distributing the greatest amount of food stamps ever.

Meanwhile, the Park Service, also part of the Department of Agriculture, asks us to "Please Do Not Feed the Animals" because the animals may grow dependent and not learn to take care of themselves.

Re:So you won a million dollars

People shouldn't let a few bad people on food stamps and ss ruin it for everyone. These programs help more people that need it than those who don't.
