    OWH: Nebraska AD Candidates

Lee Barfknecht gave a list of possible AD candidates for kNebraska. So for entertainment purposes only

Damon Evans, Georgia AD (an Omaha native)
    Mitch Barnhart, Kentucky AD
    Barry Alvarez, Wisconsin AD
    Joe Castiglone, Oklahoma AD
    Tim Wieser, Kansas State AD
    Gene Smith, Ohio State AD
    Tom Jurich, Louisville AD
Jack Swarbrick, Indianapolis attorney who's done a lot consulting work with the Omaha Sports Commison
    Bob Burton, Nebraska Associate AD
Joe Selig, head of the NU Foundation

Personally, I think they can cross Castiglone and Gene off the list. For Castiglione, why would want to leave Oklahoma? For him, Nebraska is a step down now. And as far as Gene goes, same thing, plus all the baggage when we play each other each year.

    Thoughts?

Nebraska is a step down from all of those schools.

Perhaps, but the salary offer might say differently.

I'm sure it's safe to say Alvarez and Gene Smith would not take that job. Especially Smith, why would he leave an elite program like Ohio State for one that is reeling right now?

So I was curious what Gene Smith makes as an AD at OSU:

    base salary: $450k
    incentives: $175k
    wife's university fundraising job: $165k

    So that's ~$800k

Plus he oversees the biggest athletic department in the country with ~$100 million budget.

I can't imagine he'd leave that for Nebraska.

Kentucky and Louisville yes, but not Gene Smith. Smith has reached the pinnacle, there isn't anything up.

    Re: OWH: Nebraska AD Candidates

The question is is Tom Osbourne dumb even dumb (loyal) enough to walk into that minefield and put his "god-like" status in the state at risk?

I just saw that they have a press conference scheduled to announce Osborne is taking an "undetermined role" in the athletic department, so I guess the answer to your question is "Yes."

It was more of a hypothetical - ever since the firing yesterday, once his name was brought up it became the logical choice. Thanks for the update, though...

The intriguing name is Barry Alvarez. As a graduate of UNL I'm sure he looks pretty fondly upon Nebraska. However, he is getting up there in age and he pretty much is the king of Wisconsin.

A lot of us are ISU fans so lets not be too general, shall we?

What I don't understand is that lots of folks over here think that TO will hire the next coach. Why would a coach want to come in knowing his boss will be changing soon and what AD would want to start knowing that he is responsible for the depts performance but all the coaches are already in place?

Nothing to see here mods. Keep moving.

    Re: OWH: Nebraska AD Candidates

I think most NU fans are under the impression that Osborne will bring Dave Rimington on as associate AD giving him a chance to get his feet wet, then eventually he will take over. So any new coach would essentially be greenlighted by both.

    Re: OWH: Nebraska AD Candidates

How about a possibility from out of left field - Bruce Rasmussen. He is the well-respected AD at Creighton. Give it some thought before you write him off because CU has no football program. He is miles ahead of Rimmington in terms of knowing how to run an athletic department. His learning curve to pick up the football aspect would be much easier than Rimmington's need to learn everything.

The real connection is that TO has a working relationship with Rasmussen. He has been volunteering part time as a consultant to the coaches and athletes at CU. Mostly motivational issues such as how to develop a winning attitude, values and such. He gladly responded to Rasmussen's invitation to help out after he was basically shunned by Pedersen. He could help bring back some of the power players from Omaha who have been sitting on the sidelines since Pedersen has been running the show.
