    UNI Budget Cuts

I debated on putting this in the In-State Rivals, but it is not expressly about sports, and I wondered what everyone else thinks about some of what is going on.

Basically for those of you that do not know UNI is doing major program cuts. They are closing the Malcolm Price Lab School which is used extensively to train future teachers. The school has around 400 k-12 students and is considered the Reasearch and Development school for the state of Iowa. News that the lab was closing was leaked through the newspaper 2 days before Ben Allen officially told the faculty and parents that Price Lab was closing. Last I heard Price lab has a team of lawyers to sort out the legality of closing a state entity without legislative action.

In response to this news, faculty made a vote of no confidence in the Dean of the Education dept. The president Ben Allen, and Provost I believe. I frequent Schindler(Teacher Ed building) and there are tons of immediate faculty meetings along with hushed talks between professors going on. Another round of Program cuts is coming out very soon, and things are likely to get even more heated.

This will probably end up in the cave, but blame the legislature that seems to find any excuse it can to cut funding for the state universities the last 20 years, even when they have the money.

I hate budgers. The increase of budgers is a sure sign of society breaking down. Why can't they go to the back of the line like everyone else? I applaud UNI for taking steps to decrease these miscreants.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life:
The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves Orcs. ~ John Rogers

Those dang budgers. Malcolm Price was a great resource and made it worth going to UNI. Maybe we will hit 35k in students.

I think both sides honestly have a legitimate argument. Here is an interesting piece
This is no way to run a university

    Re: UNI Budger Cuts

LOL, my first thought was I was going to read "booger cuts"

To the OP, The talk of closing Price Lab has been going on since at least the mid 90's. I don't know much more than that other than this pre-dates president Allen.
I read in the WCF Courier that it the building is falling apart and they are looking at 10's of millions of $'s to either build new or renovate. That was a big part of this decision.

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.

If this benefits ISU's education program then may the strong survive.

Within the article it says that athletics at UNI run in the red $5 million a year. Supposedly the basketball team supports itself.

    Re: UNI Budger Cuts

I talked to a few current teachers who went to UNI. They say Price Lab School is run very poorly and if they need to make cuts, that's not a bad choice. The bad thing is that it will cut jobs.
