Thought the house was going to burn down

So at 4am my wife wakes me up and says do you smell something burning. Not exactly the way you want to wake up in the middle of the night. So I am running through the house trying to find the source. Finally noticed the thermostat in the hallway display was blank, so I popped it off the wall and smoke was coming from it. I think everything is fine now, we just don't have any heat.

I tried googling the scenario and didn't find anyone else with this problem. Has anyone else had this problem? The house is only 9 years old, thought it was a little odd.

Call in Holmes Inspection. I'm sure the inspector missed something.

So it was just coming from the thermostat? If so you should be able to just get a new one at lowes or HD. Maybe it just shorted and burned battery or something.

Also I highly recommend the Nest if in fact you just need a new thermo-unit.

Almost for certain,It is a problem other than your thermostat.Something in the furnace or wire going to the furnace is drawing too heavy.

    Agree.

If you have central air those are low voltage wires, I believe 8 volts. Shouldn't even be enough to shock you let alone enough to start a fire. Most likely you have a wire crossed in the furnace that is allowing more current to go though those wires.

If you have electric wall heaters, then it could possibly be just the thermostat, but I wouldn't trust it. There are a lot of unanswered questions for me like why the breaker didn't trip.

If you don't know what you are doing you should call someone because it sounds to me like you have serious problem.
