    Jon Rothstein says 4-5 seed...

On Inside College Basketball Jon Rothstein just said Iowa State looks like a team that could get a 4 or 5 seed in the field of 64 (68) but did not elaborate at all. Are we really in that consideration? What do we need to do in KC to make a 4 seed happen? I forgot how awesome it is to be relevant in March!

If the 'last 12 games weighting' wee still in effect I would say absolutely. But the committee will take note. It's possible as the media doesn't make the calls thus the 'surprises' every year. Good tourney showing and it could happen.

Re: Jon Rothstein says 4-5 seed...

ISU has had some big wins and hasn't had what could be viewed as a bad loss in about two months. I don't think we can be a 5 seed unless we win the conference tournament, but I think we are a solid seven who wouldn't have to win the whole thing to get a 6 pretty easily.

Shoot, I quit watching at the wrong time! Or rather, I left the room only to come back to my wife watching something else...at the wrong time.

I think when the committee takes a look at the Cyclones, we may be pleasantly surprised with how they view the overall body of work.

Re: Jon Rothstein says 4-5 seed...

You never know. All depends on how the committee decides this. I tend to think though that they do take into consideration a little more your last games than your first. It's kind of like when you entered college and were a freshman. You were still getting used to things, finding your groove so a lot of companies will weigh your last two years' GPA higher than your overall.

I was just imagining last night though some of the talk when the seedings around announced.Like with Michigan, people will say "oh yeah and they beat a good Iowa State squad" without realizing our team played a little differently back then and we weren't as good as we are now (I think if we played Michigan now, we'd beat them).

Our last 12 games we've lost to Missouri (barely), Baylor, OK State (Barely), and Texas (Barely). OK State has 7 wins in conference and Texas has 9. Not really a bad loss there when you consider the Big 12 has three top 10 teams, 50% of the teams have 20+ wins, and another almost has 20 wins.

I hope Rothstein is correct, but who knows. If that's the case, then I really wonder how they'd seed us if we win the Big 12 Tournament. I also hope we wouldn't get a few teams if we WERE that seed like an Iona.

Re: Jon Rothstein says 4-5 seed...

If we win the big 12 tournament, a tournament with three consensus top 10 teams, and we don't make it to the 4 or 5 line with our resume, it wil be nothing short of a travesty.

Think about this Florida is 22-9 playing in the sec with their best win against Mississippi st. Yet ,any have them as a four seed. In all reality I can't believe we're not being talked about as a higher seed than 7 already.

Probably only if we win the Big 12 tourney. Might be a 5 if we lose in the championship game.

Agreed. The only way we get a 4, is to win the B12 tourney. 5 is probably attainable but we'd have to have a very good showing in KC if we don't win it all.

Exactly. I think one win probably bumps us up to maybe a 6. A 6 seed is my (realistic) hope at this point.

A five seed means the committee thinks we're a top 16-20 team. If we beat Texas and hang with Missouri I don't see any reason why that isn't reasonable. A 6 seed (top 21-24) at the very worst would make sense. If we beat Missouri then anything lower than a 5 seed would be weird. If we somehow won the Big 12 tourney I'd expect us to be a 3 seed.

+1. Ditto Wisconsin, only one win against the top teams in the Big 10, yet being a 4 seed in most recent Bracketology (3/2).

The lack of national respect, outside of Bubble Watch, is really getting silly at this point. Only positive is I'm sure it makes for excellent bulletin board material for CFH.

Re: Jon Rothstein says 4-5 seed...

We completely belonged in the last several games, no question about it. Playing Missouri, Baylor, and KSU with the media saying 2 of those are top 10 with the other beating those top ten teams says a lot a lot about where we are at right now. Whether Missouri and Baylor are top 10 teams, I'm not sure. But I know for sure we have the talent, coaching, and team ability where we belong in that group. We didn't play over our ability or get lucky... we're on par with those teams. I would actually say this team had lulls in the last 4 games and our performance (above/below ability) was just normal... we didn't play great, we didn't play poor.

NCAA seating should reflect the growth of this team and recognize its current playing level is on par to teams they say are top 10-15 versus 30-50+. While we limited ourselves somewhat based on our early play (bad losses) I think the seating is more heavily weighted towards recency. (however I think the Stinson/Blaylock team won like 9 games in a row but lost early in the Big12 tourney... they were a 9 seed I think).

    Here's my guess...

Win or lose to TX = 6 seed
Beat TX, then Missouri = 5 seed
    Win the tourney... 4 seed

The best part of this is that with Fred being young I feel ISU MBB is back to what we expect. It's exciting again.

Did anyone think that maybe ESPN was down playing us all year so when we make a run at the tournament they can call us a cinderella? Seems like this was a long term strategy that they have been abiding by all year.

I know everyone is taking their best shot at guessing seeds but my simple rule of thumb right now is we have a 7 seed and every win in KC will improve that seed by 1.

Win the conference tourney and we could get a 4.
