Twister Sister Summary -Ladies dismantled at Baylor

This game started off showing the contrasts of these teams. Baylor wanted up tempo and ISU wanted to limit the clock. ISU was shooting the three and came out fairly hot from three but the inside defense was suspect..largely due to some very suspect calls by the officials that largely benefited Griner. Iowa state was clearly relaxed coming into this one.

The inside game of Baylor allowed them to slowly get some breathing room and got the lead to 17-11 after ISU had led 11-10. But we would continue to battle and make things happen.

Interesting observation early...when we drove inside we picked up fouls. We just didn't do it often enough.

There was no answer for Griner early middle or late. *Eating Prins, or anyone else guarding her, alive. Prins wearing something on her shoulder showing the signs of that injury but she battled throughout the game. The difference in athleticism between her and Griner is immense.

ISU continued to hang around mainly down by 5 for most of the rest of the half.*Prins got hot from outside with a pair of threes and a two and ISU was making the game fun in the first half and scary for Baylor. I kept thinking that they shouldn't be worried as any team shooting as hot as we were tends to cool off. We would.

Saw way too many shot clock violations in this game. We wanted to milk the clock but too many times the offense didn't get in gear early enough or the defense just limited what we could do.

Yet, facing the number one team in the country we were going blow for blow with them. This was a game where you had to hope the three would keep falling.*Wow...Pop is shooting threes! She hit her first three of the season mainly due to aggressive guard play driving inside and dishing out.*Wow, wow, wow. And incredibly loose sisters squad was in a tie with the bears 32-32 at the half.

The second half started off as a near mirror image of the first. Moody would take a steal coast to coast for a traditional three and Big C would hit another as ISU would creep out to a small initial lead. Of course Baylor would keep answering back with Griner. She is unstoppable when you only put one defender on her and that was ISUs strategy. The last good image of ISU basketball was when we led 40-36. Remember those numbers.

The officials continued to call ticky tack fouls whenever Griner has the ball. Adding insult to injury was a lack of calls in the other direction. We were getting beat up. That led to two horrible turnovers by Loz and a 7-0 Baylor run. It got worse as we continued to yield to the full court press with turnovers and Baylor was on a 15-3 run. The officiating was blatantly horrible. There were several times when TV coverage had shots of the Baylor defense and it consisted of slapping, pushing, and in one case shoving our girl to the floor. The real joke was when Griner tripped over her own feet and we were called for a foul. Unbelievable.

Adding insult to injury we were no longer hitting any kind of shots. When we went inside no one...no one could get a shot to fall. This was a patented ISU shooting drought coupled with intense defense by Baylor. The main victim was Loz as Sims and company made her look very very slow at times.*

We literally came unglued in the second half. Shot clock violations, turnovers, badly missed shots. I have to give credit to Baylor as they rattled our cage big time. BUT...many of the things happening were our own doing. Turnovers caused by lack of hustle, I.e. not coming to the ball were a big culprit.*

Before we knew what had happened Baylor had run off a 23-5 run and this game was getting away from us. it would only get worse. The game ended with Baylor out scoring the sisters 41-13 after that brief lead we held early in the half. It was a pure dismantling of our squad.

Not much more could be said about this one. Baylor is an outstanding team and even more so when the officials contribute to the game as they did today. Where the first half was a relaxed "what have we got to lose" team the second half was a scared tentative team. The same aggression wasn't there and neither was the shots falling. Also have to give Baylor their due. They aren't ranked #1 for nothing and in the second half the covered the three point line like glue. When they did that we had no answer.

Time to get ready for the tourney and a rematch with KState. See you all in Kansas City.

Baylor, thanks to Griner, shot 58% from the field and hit 20 of 26 free throws. 12 steals and 8 blocks should say something too. Prins was the only effective player we had all day with support from Moody. I wish I could say this was a game where we just played badly, but I honestly think this is just the difference between the #1 team and us. The double whammy of Griner and Sims was too much to handle.
