    Ads on this site

I was using my wifes laptop to look at this site this A.M. I hardly ever have a need to use her computer. I jump on this site and ads for womens clothing come up. That never happens (ads geared toward women) on my computer. What has to be done to get rid of the ''knowledge'' that advertisers use, somewhere in the bowels of my computers, to target these ads to the user?

I think one time I saw an add for UNI or maybe it was Iowa on here. I thought this was strange but then one time I was on HN I saw an add for ISU.

    Re: Ads on this site

This is about to become a real big deal. The government tracks everything you do; without a warrant mind you. If you are a U.S. citizen you might actually be a terrorist in disguise so that gives them the right to spy on you. Your politicians (Grassley, et al have given themselves this power BTW). But now companies are getting in on the spying business; primarily Facebook and Google which are used by almost everyone.

Its going to be an interesting fight. I expect the consumers to lose by the way. Why? Because the media is on the side of Google, etc and the media will shut down most objections (refuse to publish) and publish TONS of stuff in support of it. Kinda like the rag does on social issues (i.e. push progressive agenda).

So its the same fight that has been going on for awhile now; the media, big business, and the government against the people. The people are losing.

I wouldn't worry until you use her computer and ads for hiring local hitmen start popping up.

    Re: Ads on this site

It's pretty amazing, and scary. This fall, I booked a trip to Vegas and a stay at Country Inn (different trip!) Since then, most of the ads on the site have been for Vegas or Country Inns. Yesterday, I was browsing for golf clubs, and you guess it, now my ads are now for golf equipment sites.

    Re: Ads on this site

The ads are run by Google and are shown based on the searches made on your IP address. The advertising campaigns are getting quite specific online.

Google actually lets you view what it thinks it knows about you too based on your browsing history.
