Best Way To Be A Cyclone Football Fan...

Is to have zero expectations. Before attending Saturday's game (the only home game I can make it to this year), I resigned myself to just tailgating, having a good time, and watching the game. I was disappointed in the huge loss, but not terribly upset. Seriously, nothing surprises me about Cyclone football anymore. I was sitting in the south end zone for Shaggy's first attempt. I thought it went through, but found out otherwise. Immediately I thought, story of a Cyclone's life right there. At this point, ISU fans simply cannot expect a whole lot or else they'll be highly disappointed.

I know that I'm going to get barraged w/ the "loser mentality" replies, but what is there to make a fan think otherwise? I still support Chizik and ISU football, but until there is an explicit positive occurrence instead of the implied stuff that a lot of people are grabbing onto the best way to handle the rest of this season and probably next season is to master the art of tailgating and expect nothing when entering Jack Trice. That way, when something good does happen, it's like Christmas morning. However, that one "good thing" is kind of like hitting that perfect shot in a round of golf. Just the fact that it happened will keep you coming back for more.

I'm an Iowa State fan and a glutton for punishment.

I wouldn't say zero..........just realistic. Realistic expectations seem to p#$$ me off occasionally still, but I think we need to expect and demand something from our teams. Realistic means giving Chizik and McDermott a few years to prove their worth. Zero means they can stay forever regardless. I think both will succeed in a major way, but it will take a little time.

I'm kind of the same way. I get my hopes up and they always seems to crash into the ground. The best way to enjoy the rest of this football season and probably a lot of next year too, is to just have fun (tailgating) and don't get too hopeful of a win inside the stadium.

I figured we would get throttled Saturday so I got drunker than normal tailgating. Turns out I was still disappointed and frustrated. I just can't go into a game with no emotion at all, even with the extra alcohol.

We actually have the worst fieldgoal kicking team by far in the Big 12.

Why not just go for it at this point. What are we going to do? Lose the game?

I agree. We can get beat 157 to 0 this week and I will walk away somewhat happy if I see us take some chances. Go for it on 4th down. Try to score a touchdown instead of setting up for a missed field goal.

We have absolutely, postively, NOTHING to lose. Let's play like that. Let's call the game like that.

I understand what you are saying but I cannot have zero expectations.

I do have expectations that there needs to be improvement throughout the season and we need to see positives in the games that we lose. I didn't see any positives in the Texas game and I think we are not improving from game to game.. This frustrates me very much.

I have expectations as stated in my post. They are to play and call the game like we have nothing to lose.

Re: Best Way To Be A Cyclone Football Fan...

Only thing I expect with my season ticket purchase is to see a football game week after week, last week barely qualified. I would think for a game to take place there has to be teams competing on both sides which was arguable at best.

Re: Best Way To Be A Cyclone Football Fan...

I disagree with the zero expectation mentality. The players are coached to have a "we can do anything attitude" and I think we as fans should have the same outlook if the team is to be competitive and win. Help motivate the players and they will succeed.

I think it is a key ingredient to "Hilton Magic" and it should be somehow instilled to the Jack Trice football fans.

Well, you actually would be wrong.

From the Big XII site, Culbertson is 3 for 4 in conference play through 3 games and perfect from PATs (only 4 touchdowns.) There are at least 3 - 4 kickers with worse FG % the worst being TAMU kicker that is 3 for 8 on the year. The kicker from OU has missed 3 PAT attempts.

So, by my count that would be his first miss in conference play this season.

And no we aren't actually the worst field goal kicking team by far in the Big XII.

send money, don't expect anything in return, and send more money. If we do go to a bowl game, ***** about it not being good enough. Then send more money.

    1912 and still waiting...

I guess you gotta embrace who you are, I've come to terms with what being a Cyclone fan is a LONG time ago. We are rebuilding and spirits will be low now, but we will reap the rewards in the future, and it will come so much sweeter to those who sat and watched through the tough times. I really can't say I am used to the huge losses like on saturday, but it WAS texas. I got used to playing up and down to whoever we faced...like hanging with ranked teams or maybe beating them and then coming right back and slouching against a non-BCS opponent or something. Nevertheless, see everybody on saturday!
