    FB Facility

Someone explain how if we are this far March 1 how we're not in before the season starts? Who's a CE here?

Well, they've had the outside shell done for State Gym for about a year now and it STILL isn't done. I'm not a ConE by any stretch of the imagination, but it isn't as crazy as it sounds.

First off a CE is NOT a ConE...different role, different major, different responsibilities.

This. A Con E is like a CE, except without the hard classes :P

    Re: FB Facility

Looks like from the picture that the roofing system is starting at the South and working to the North. Weather dependent, roofing activity will be complete 4-8weeks without delay from other trades is my guess with detailing of parapets, canopies, etc.

They do have temporary winter protection in place and I haven't seen the webcam since precast and steel erection began so I don't know if they have been doing underground MEP work or not. This will have to be completed before concrete slab-on-grade is placed which needs tempered air (hence the winter protection, and probably several heaters inside).

I just looked at the daily photos and I'm guessing underground MEP work is progressing and/or slab-on-grade prep under the roof deck/enclosed area.

There's still over 1/2 the building that looks like it needs to be erected.

The best thing for the progress of this construction for the cold and wet conditions (unpredictable) to cease. As erection of structural steel and precast, floor deck, roof deck progress more area can be enclosed and protected from the elements if need be. Obviously, warmer and drier conditions will allow for slab on deck to be poured, they are still a few weeks out from that it appears no 2nd level floor deck is placed and thus no MEP rough-in on floor deck is complete.

Work will be done by football season I know, they always are! It may be a lot of extra hours and overtime, but it WILL be complete.

    Re: FB Facility

Civil Engineers design, Construction Engineers build what the CE designs. In some cases, like now we have a ISU CE grad working for a general contractor handling all the tasks associated with steel (scheduling, procurement, problems).

FYI, the Structural Engineer of Record for the Scoreboard is the Structural Engineer of Record for the Football Practice Facility I believe.

    Re: FB Facility

One would think that we are just getting into March and they shouldn't be too far behind due to weather related issues. Iowa typically has snow/wet conditions all the way through April. That should have been taken into account when planning the construction schedule last spring.

...although I'm not in Iowa currently, so I have no idea what the weather is like, and I'm not a ConE (although I'm still in the building industry)...

I have a feeling that most projects get hung up on some sort of domino effect due to a tight initial construction schedule that may then be exasperated by weather.

    Re: FB Facility

I'm not going to say they won't have it completed by this fall, but there is only one small portion of the building that is completely enclosed at this point. Even once they have the entire building enclosed, it's still going to take a long time to get the inside complete.

If you've ever seen a house built it's amazing how quickly the framing is done and the exterior can look complete. It's that pesky detail work, that makes it look good, that takes so long.

    Re: FB Facility

The shell of the building goes up relatively quickly, as they want to get it enclosed so they can have some environmental control. Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing and finish work take longer than you think.

Suddenly there are more trades on site to manage and work around each other, lots of small scale things to build.

Is this post anywhere close to a site record?

Did you read the thread with the live video of the top of the scoreboard going up? It was 3 hours of 200 people making erection jokes while the scoreboard moved about an inch a minute.

Maybe Viagra will sponser the building and it will help it get up faster.

Sorry I missed that one. I was in the stadium watching it.
