Upset about 56-3? Maybe you forgot these scores...

Getting blown out is nothing new for the Cyclones. I hate it as much as the next guy. But just to bring a little perspective to the conversation, here are some scores from some of our best years ever.

    2000 (9-3 record)
Texas A&M beat us 30-7 at home.
    K-State beat us 56-10.

    2001 (7-4 record)
    Nebraska beat us 48-14.
    K-State beat us 42-3.

    2002 (7-5 record)

    Oklahoma beat us 49-3.
    K-State beat us 58-7.

2003 (2-10, no need to go there)

    2004 (6-5 record)
    Oklahoma St. beat us 36-7.
Texas A&M beat us 34-3. At home.

    2005 (7-4 record)
It kills me to look back at how close we were to an undefeated season in 2005. 3 overtime losses and a heartbreaker at home to Baylor. This one will always sting.

So....if we had all of those blowouts in good years, then let's not freak out that we lost big to Texas on Saturday. We are building for the future and things will get better.

Yeah it makes me want to throw up as well. 2005 hurt badly. I remember slamming a glass bottle and breaking it all over everywhere after the NU loss....oops.

Re: Upset about 56-3? Maybe you forgot these scores...

Everyone is supportivem but the path goes both ways.

This game just played looks as bad or worse than any of the games listed above. They essentially went through the motioins the last three quarters. On pass interceptions they did not even chase the players for a thrill. They are hung out for the rest of the season unless they show more effort. The skill people need to get their vitamins and try harder. I think the 2 lines are okay, but the others can do better. EWe and they expect better effort. If you lose with effort, so be it. Losing like Iowas State did in the last half and the way Nebraska is doing is just plain throwing in the towel. the crowd was as silent as at Texas game as at Kent State. They saw little effort and not much worth to get excited about.

How many long offensive plays have we done in the last few games?

How many three and outs have we done on defense?

Just feel these items should be discussed. We can be supportive all we want but it looks like Chizik (and/or Callahan) are not getting max effort out of several players on the field. Ace is doing his part. Where are the others? DSomeone needs to make a play. I really look hard at special teams o0f all types. That can be fixed much easier yet it continues to be a pile of junk. Look at the stats and be embarrassed.

Re: Upset about 56-3? Maybe you forgot these scores...

I don't care if we are good or bad, a 53 point loss is embarassing regardless what kind of team you have. The sad thing is we had some opportunities in the first quarter to score and instead we wound up missing 1 of 2 FG's. It's been the story of the season. We drive down the field and for some reason shoot ourselves in the foot about every time we get across the 40 yard line. We couldn't even score in garbage time.

I know I've been preaching patience just like a lot of you but I'm sick of the excuses and comparisions of "if you think this is bad remember this" stuff. Our competition has been tough recently but I'm a little concerned that we still are making mistakes that we've been making all year. If I saw some noticible improvement things might be a little different but the staff basically has this season as a mulligan so why not take some risks or shake some things up? If they don't work then it's not any worse than what we've been doing which I think has been a little on the conservative side a times. You can't be critical of the past then try to sugar-coat the present when the same things happen.

Everything other than the first few series on sat made me think of 2006. It just felt like they were out there because it was scheduled ahead of time but no one really wanted to be there.

Right on Brian, the team quit and if you think differently you watched a different football game.

That part has to make Chizik sick the most - that his kids quit very early in the game. Two straight weeks they played completely uninspired football.

Even more reason to get some new blood on the field.

This is starting to remind me of the '02 campaign. When thing starting going south in a big way, the team just folded and mailed it in, especially the older players - culminating with a loss to all-powerful UConn.

Don't forget, ISU was ranked #9 when OU pasted us in Norman.

That game on sat reminded me a lot of the uconn game. Cold, rainy, crappy football. Of course in the uconn game you always held out hope that they would figure it out and get it going. I had no hope for that on sat.

Give me one reason to start Meyer the rest of the year.

Re: Upset about 56-3? Maybe you forgot these scores...

As I mentioned before, I watched the game from the ISU sidelines and I have to agree, I think the players eventually quit on themselves. Yeah there was cheering and trying to support the team from the sidelines going on but seemed kinda forced habit almost. Even in the last minute of the game Blythe was yelling at the defense on the field saying things like "keep playing hard, don't quit!" and "come on now, let's make a big play here!" You can act all rah rah but from the reaction he got back from that which was basically next to nothing you could tell they were just ready to get off the field and get it over with.

I was standing just a few yards away most of the time and seemed like a lot of long faces and lack of energy Saturday. I would have loved to been standing that close in a close game to take in all the excitement though. Chizik is a pretty quiet guy on the sidelines too. He just walks up and down and the assistants do most of the talking to the players. He might go in on a huddle before they take the field once in awhile but he does not show his emotions much. I wouldn't mind seeing him rip into guys once in awhile when they come off the field after a mistake or uninspired play but I'm fine that he's not the rah rah guy either.

I think you start him against Oklahoma but play Arnaud more than usual. Then after that game it's fair game to shake it up and start Arnaud. I don't want to through this kid to the wolves like that but I do think we need to start him soon to see what he has instead of finding out next season.

Yep. And the program hasn't been right since, just a slow sublimation into what we see on the field now. I was optimistic that Dan was able to right the ship in 04, but it turns out that's when the North began to stink.

I think it will be addition by subtraction next season with some of the seniors we lose to graduation.

*said in best Lovie Smith voice*

    Bret Meyer is our quarterback.

    Bret Meyer is our quarterback.

    Bret Meyer is our quarterback.

    Ok...seriously now...

The OU defense is really tough and I'd hate to ruin Arnaud in the way Meyer was ruined last year. Bret was not without fault for all the hits he took in '06, yet that season ruined him mentally as a quarterback and he still (and won't) recover from it. He's taking a lot fewer his this season because of the better scheme on the line and because he's been coached to not hold onto the ball nearly as long.

Still, he has happy feet back there, expecting to get hit on every play. Not good.

Arnaud is much more fundamentally sound that Meyer...it doesn't take much to see that. Although, I was ripped up before the season for saying such, I still stick by my guns on that.

I don't want to take a great athlete like Arnaud and toss him to the wolves behind an averageish offensive line and receivers that don't seem to be working hard to get free int he secondary. While it would not be his fault, he'd look bad. He'd lose confidence in himself and then fans would cry for Bates. When Bates struggled, we'd cry for a 3rd year of eligibility from Wallace.

I'd like to see us at least get past the OU game. Mizzu, K-State, CU and KU are good - yet I don't think quite as good on defense as OU is.
