They CAN find legal workers to harvest their crops, they just don't want to pay what legal workers are worth. They want to shovel more profits into their own pockets.

I'll be happy to shell out more money for groceries if it means we are actually enforcing/reforming our immigrant policies...aka, if you aren't a legal citizen then get the heck out.

A agree with you, but it seems to me that we as consumers need to take the first step. If, for example, we shop at local farmers' markets, co-ops (e.g., Wheatsfields here in Ames), CSAs, or otherwise directly from the farmer, we send the message with our wallets that we are willing to pay more for food grown/raised the right way.

If we shop at our local super-walmart, then we are sending the message that we want the cheapest food possible, even if it means hiring illegial migrant workers. Farmers and agri-businesses will do exactly what we tell them to do with our choices.

We are either paying on the front side, with higher food prices, or we are paying on the back side, with tax money going to support the expanded legal system requirements of criminals, uninsured motorists and unpaid hospital bills. I'd rather pay on the front side.

This is just one of many examples that illustrates the need for a guest worker program.

I agree. America is in a serious worker shortage, right now.

And if profits are so evil, who is going to pay the paychecks of ALL of the schlubs that post on here if there weren't a profit in it? You think Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny brings your paycheck because you are "a good person?" Do you really believe that every lard-butt out there deserves a "living wage?"

Sounds like some folks should move to Venezuala or Cuba and live in the "workers' paradise" so they could fix their points of view.

Myself, I like my fresh fruits and vegetables in December. AND paying a small price to bring some level of financial stability to Mexico.

You mean 38M illegals later and they are still short of workers in California?

Re: California Farmers Say Stop Cracking Down On "illegal" workers

Ok, before I get into this, I'm not going to accuse all welfare users as lazy or unwilling to get jobs. I get there are certainly difficult situations out there that some people are in a situation that makes it extremely difficult to make changes in their lives without help.

That being said, there are many, many people just completely abusing the welfare system. We have a system that doesn't even require people to have been employed by a certain date - they just need to meet a certain quota of job interviews to remain on welfare. That is abuse (signified by restaurants and other stores will literally have those just seeking the 'reference' sign a log book confirming they 'applied' for a job just so they don't waste the paper they would normally use to 'apply' for the job).

I have no problem helping a mother of three with a deadbeat father not living up to his share of responsibility get herself back on her feet. I have issues with people that make a career out of motherhood by having far more children than she can afford and collecting checks from the government as a form of income. My taxpayer dollars were never meant for that.

If these people abusing the system would quit abusing the system and simply get a job (and we change the rules requiring this and enforcing this), we would have less problems with worker shortages in America.

In a perfect world that would be a great solution. However, I don't think it is a very practical solution, because there is nothing society/government could possibly do to make it happen.

But Americans are NOT willing to pay more for more ethical products, look at the power of wal-mart. People say they hate it, but when I drive by I see a full parking lot every day.

Can't have it both ways folks.
