    1979 Big Eight Magazine

This magazine was the first I remember that focused on an individual conference. I think it started coming out in about 1972 or 1973. There was Street and Smiths already out but that was a national magazine but this magazine had a few articles about each team and some of the players. I scanned the cover and the three pages about ISU and the depth chart. Pretty fun to read this if you were around back then. I will do some more in a few days. I have several of these from the 70's and early 80's.

Interesting to see that a national playoff was a discussion topic over 30 years ago.

It was right about that time that the CFA was formed (College Football Association). And it was called CFA football on TV, not NCAA football. I think Alabama and either Nebraska or Oklahoma were the two schools that were the leaders but there were 63 or 64 schools and they were going to be separated from all the others. Kind of like the BCS conferences today.

Edit: I will have to do some research but I think there were lawsuits either by the CFA schools or the others over how money was being distributed.

Just a NSFW warning. The first picture is of Nebraska. If my boss had seen that, I'd be packing my things right now . . .

It was Oklahoma and Georgia. this was the era were the law suits started going about lack of tv appearances and money.CFB as we know it today started when OU/Georgia won the lawsuit in 1984.

If only ISU fans knew that that was the beginning of some dark times for ISU football. Geez, what could have been.

    Re: 1979 Big Eight Magazine

    Wesley,

Correction on the year of the Big Eight magazines' existance.

I still have this one and one from 1977 and 1978. I use to read these from cover to cover and back again and the magazines wear tells the whole story. Still a lot of fun to pick up and read from time to time.

I specifically remember the '77 issue because Dexter Green was on the front cover and ISU just came off of the '76 victory of nebby...was a lot of good reading. Also, one of the issues had Mike Stensrud in it with Reggie Kinlaw and another dude who were up for the Outland Trophy that year.

Since I don't have all of my belongings moved over to my apartment, I will look for them when I do get home and scan you a copy of the covers.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane...

They customized the covers by state. Probably one of the first mags to do so. Smart.

    Re: 1979 Big Eight Magazine

If I remember right, they use to have a 'cartoon' of all of the teams in the Big Eight and the caption from the '77 mag was "Now everybody sees them coming" with Cy on a skateboard trying to get by the sooner schooner...what memories.

The 1981 edition says 10 year anniversary so I guess 1972 would have been the first year. I don't remember seeing one until 1976 so I must have not been looking in the right places. The cartoons were great. I just looked at five of them and ISU was either a blackbird or a crow in all of them. They didn't even try to use a reasonable likeness of a Cardinal. I'll scan those and add them as soon as I can.

    Re: 1979 Big Eight Magazine

I also have a bunch of the Athlons Big Eight magazines from that era. In the 1981 issue they have the national to 100 recruits listed. It is called Dr. Charley Howards Top 100. Here are a few notables with their ranking.

    1. Sean Salisbury
    2. Bill Fralic
    5. Mark Rypien
    6. Jack Del Rio
    10. Doug Williams
    12. William Perry
    85. Mike Tomczak
    88. Mike Golic

These were the top 100 high school seniors from 1980.( according to charley howards)
