The Cyclones could have done plenty to solidify their position in the field, but lost at Oklahoma State on Saturday. With games against Kansas State and Baylor looming to finish the regular season, nothing is a certainty for Iowa State.
Yep, pretty much. Beat KSU and we're in, I think. Lose to KSU and Baylor, and I'd feel a whole lot better if we can win a game or two in the conference tourney.

The NCAA site updated their RPI numbers for the week. This is how the league stacks up, with current RPI rank and number of spots each team moved up or dropped (or neither).

    Baylor (1) +0
    Texas A&M (6) +0
    Kansas State (12) -1
    Oklahoma (15) +3
    Kansas (42) +4
    Iowa State (46) -7
    Texas (55) +9
    Oklahoma State (57) +3
    Texas Tech (62) -12
    Missouri (102) +2

In short, we're moving in the wrong direction. It is essential that we beat K-State in the next game. There are $2 tickets available through Tuesday.

Minimum three games left, including our first game of the Big XII tournament. I really feel as though we need to win at least one. Go Cyclones!!!

It's likely we'll end up the 5 seed playing the 4 seed in the Big 12. K-state is the 4 seed.

Wow...makes me feel "better" about the comments I made in my summary yesterday. Someone is feeling the shakiness of our season too.

Yeah, I see I basically said the same thing you did.

If we lose our next three, we still might get in. Those three games are against KSU (RPI #12), @ Baylor (RPI #1), and then most likely KSU again in the tournament. Those losses likely wouldn't hurt our RPI. However, we'd be 17-13 (8-10 in conference) with an RPI in the 45-50 range, and that's really on the bubble.

and having lost four straight...that wouldn't look good to the committee. If we do that I fully expect a bottom feeder seed as a host school.

    Re: 2/27 WBB bracketology

What is everyone's thoughts on the true home / away schedule with everyone in the conference? Has it hurt our conference? We only have two teams ranked this year with Baylor and aTm. Kansas St and Oklahoma both have top 20 rpi rankings.

I think they are projecting the same number of team as last year. After you take out the automatic bids and then teams in the top 25 without an automatic bid, you are only talking about 18 at large bids with that being lower if Delaware, Green Bay, and Gonzaga lose. They are ranked and if they lose in there conference tournaments that is an at large bid to conferences that would only get one bid otherwise.

    Re: 2/27 WBB bracketology

I don't think it's hurt the league, but it's certainly taken away the shinier win/loss records teams have seen in the past. The league RPI is still tops, as it has been for years. That absolutely counts for something and tends to get teams into the tournament that might not make it in another conference (we've made it in with a 7-9 Big 12 record before).

This year, aside from Baylor's perfect 30-0, only A&M has fewer than 10 losses overall (8). Only 4.5 games separates 2nd place from 8th place. Also, consider that if the three close road losses for Iowa State (UT, KU, A&M) were wins, we would have sole possession of 2nd place right now. Road wins are tougher for everyone since you have to go to every opposing arena. Even Baylor has had some tough road games (last night).

No, realistically we are not looking good if we go 8-10 without a run in the tourney. 9-9 and we are in as a host. With the 8 minute gaps we seem to have in games lately I am getting a little pessimistic about our finish. Last loss was a bubble popper for a team not hosting.

People seem to assume hosting makes our odds better. I personally think it makes no difference. The committee is made up of athletic directors and conference commissioners. There's no NCAA rep trying to push the bottom line.

It absolutely helps. WBB is not a big draw and the turnout will not be big unless ISU is in the tournament. It helps a ton and will get us in.

    Re: 2/27 WBB bracketology

I fall a bit on both sides. I know the selection committee isn't supposed to look at that when making decisions. They claim it's not an influence and you want to take them at their word. However, a part of me believes that behind-the-scenes, if it comes down to a school that's hosting vs one that is not when choosing the last few, the team with the hosting gig will get the nod. Pure speculation on my part, but it would be hard to say with any absolute certainty that it does not ever come into play.
