Could LHN prevent Texas from making the tournament?

I have been thinking a lot about this over the past couple of weeks, but it appears that UT may miss out on making the NCAA tournament. I'm wondering if a lot of that has to do with their Jan. 24 match-up against ISU. That game was only available on the LHN and as we all know, ended with a Texas victory. Could the lack of coverage for that game be the difference maker for their tournament hopes?

Texas has a solid non-con win over Temple, a top 20 SOS ranking (according to CBS), and conference wins over Kansas State and ISU.

If you were like me and noticed on Saturday, that during the Texas-Texas Tech game they noted that Kansas State (not Iowa State) was one of the Longhorns quality wins. This got me thinking - does ESPN not want to promote their own property, by running LHN highlights of the UT-ISU game? For as hyped as the LHN was pre-launch, it has done nothing to warrant the $10 million per year price tag - at least in year one.

With reports that OU and OK State are looking to pursue their own networks, I think the Big 12 needs to assess just how valuable individual networks really are.

What is everyone's thoughts: had the ISU-UT game been on ESPN3, would Texas have a better chance to be in the tournament?

I don't think TV coverage affected them at all. Their next game will have us listed as a quality win.

The tournament is selected by vote, but by a committee. These people have more statistics on each school than any sports writer would review before making a decision. It's a doubtful that there would be any impact because a few games weren't seen by the country because of their TV coverage

Re: Could LHN prevent Texas from making the tournament?

on selection sunday there are probably 85 teams that believe they have a shot.
on average they have played about 30 games each.
Granted manu of those games were against each other. But there are several hundred, even thousands games that go into consideration. That means many unseen games.

Don't think the lack of tv will have much of an effect

Ya, if Texas misses the tournament, it's because more people didn't witness their victory over the basketball factory that is ISU.

I didn't mean for it to sound that this is all about ISU - the game could have been against an opponent like Kansas State. I'm just wondering if Texas is robbed of a quality win because only a select number of media outlets were there to witness the outcome of that game.

I just think UT is the perfect example of the old addage: "If a tree falls in the forest, but nobody is around to hear it, does it make a noise?"

How can talking heads, media outlets, and the selection committee make an informed opinion about a team like Texas where they were not able to reflect on one of Texas' quality wins because they weren't a subscriber to the LHN.

These guys don't have time to watch every game for every team. They use statistics as the basis for the majority of their evaluations. They'll look at the stats from the ISU/UT game and move on.

Re: Could LHN prevent Texas from making the tournament?

The selection committee isn't filling in the brackets based on who has and hasn't been on national TV - they just couldn't possibly watch that many games. They're using statistical factors such as RPI, SoS, top 50 wins, top 100 wins, under 100 losses, etc. to fill in an S-curve to create the tournament. Nobody having access to LHN will not have any impact whatsoever on Texas making the tournament.
