    Big 12 Preview/Predictions/Results

The Big 12 Wrestling Championships will be held on Saturday, March 3rd at Missouri.

    Info for following along:
Semifinals start at 11 AM and will be streamed on Big12 Sports
3rd place matches start at 1 PM will also be streamed on Big12 Sports
The finals start at 6:30 PM and will be on FSN in the Midwest and some other areas.

Live stats will be available on Track Wrestling

Iowa State will be doing their usual live blog, I'll update on Saturday morning with the link.

    Update: http://www.cyclones.com/ViewArticle....B_OEM_ID=10700

You can also follow Iowa State Wrestling on Twitter for updates.

My projections at seedings are below, followed by weight by weight breakdowns. For 197 and HWT I had to guess a bit, but I am pretty confident on my preseeds at the other weights.

I think we have 6 for sure qualifiers, one probable (Ward at 197) and one possible (Moreno at 157). Technically we could qualify at 133 or 149, but the chances of that are very slim.

I want to encourage discussion so I'm happy to answer any questions anyone might have about the tournament or the season so far (other than troll "why aren't we ranked #1"). The team has really come along so I am excited for the tournament.

The rankings are Intermat/Amatuer Wrestling News/TOM and the seedings are my own guesses.

    Re: Big 12 Preview/Predictions/Results

    125: (4 Auto bids)
    1. #3/3/3 Alan Waters - Missouri - (23-2) - (4-0 Big 12)
    2. #9/8/9 Jarrod Patterson - Oklahoma - (25-5) - (4-1 Big 12)
    3. #12/19/14 Ryak Finch - Iowa State - (14-6) - (2-4 Big 12)
    4. #13/14/15 Jon Morrison - Oklahoma State - (18-8) - (0-4 Big 12)

As you can tell from the fact that all four wrestlers have autoqualified, 125 is a pretty deep weight class in the Big 12s. This weight class will be all about getting a better seed for NCAAs. Finch is a lock for the tournament but a win over Waters and/or Patterson would put him in a very good position to receive a seed at nationals, making his path to AA much easier.

So far Ryak has had a hard time against top 10 guys, so my prediction is he wrestles to seed, 3rd place. Morrison is a very good wrestler as well so that will be one of the better 3rd place matches in the tourney.

    Re: Big 12 Preview/Predictions/Results

    133: (3 Auto bids)
    1. #1/1/1 Jordon Oliver - Oklahoma State - (24-1) - (7-0 Big 12)
    2. #10/10/12 Nathan McCormick - Missouri - (13-4) - (4-1 Big 12)
    3. #11/11/10 Jordan Keller - Oklahoma - (20-7) - (2-4 Big 12)
    4. UR/UR/UR Iowa State - Iowa State - (x-x) - (0-6 Big 12)

This is the one weight class where we don't really have a chance at all. Whether we send out Hallman or Terukina the fact is they will be overmatched. Our only chance is to catch Keller or McCormick off guard in the 3rd place match and score a lucky pin.

Both RJ and Shayden wrestle their hearts out every match. So you never know, but I'd give them about a 5% chance of getting an upset to steal an a****id. I predict that we wrestle to seed and take 4th place.

    My prediction is 4th place.

All of the contested matches between Big XII wrestlers at 133:
    RJ Hallman (Iowa State) 4-14/0-3
    Nathan McCormick Missouri 133 L DEC 5-9
    Eric Wilson Missouri 133 L DEC 3-9
    Jordan Keller Oklahoma 133 L MD 0 - 14

    Shayden Terukina (Iowa State) 5-7/0-2
Jordan Oliver Oklahoma State 133 L FALL 2:38
    Jordan Keller Oklahoma 133 L DEC 3-8

    Jordan Oliver (oklahoma State) 24-1/7-0
Shayden Terukina Iowa State 133 W FALL 2:38
    Derek Geiges Oklahoma 133 W FALL 1:30
    Ben Cash Iowa State 133 W TF5 17 - 1 (3:09)
    Nathan McCormick Missouri 133 W FALL 1:43
    Jordan Keller Oklahoma 133 W MD 11-2
    Derek Geiges Oklahoma 133 W FALL 1:30
    Eric Wilson Missouri 133 W TF5 5:24

    Jordan Keller (Oklahoma) 20-7/2-4
    Nathan McCormick Missouri 133 L DEC 1-2
Shayden Terukina Iowa State 133 W DEC 8-3
    RJ Hallman Iowa State 133 W MD 14 - 0
    Nathan McCormick Missouri 133 L DEC 3-5
Jordan Oliver Oklahoma State 133 L MD 2-11

    Nathan McCormick (Missouri) 13-4/4-1
    Keller, Jordan Oklahoma 133 W DEC 2 - 1
RJ Hallman Iowa State 133 W DEC 9-5
Jordan Oliver Oklahoma State 133 L FALL 4:43
    Jordan Keller Oklahoma 133 W DEC 5-3

    Re: Big 12 Preview/Predictions/Results

    141 (3 Auto bids)
    1. #3/3/3 Kendric Maple - Oklahoma - (26-1) - (6-1 Big 12)
    2. #12/13/13 Josh Kindig - Oklahoma State - (15-7) - (3-1 Big 12)
    3. #18/16/14 Luke Goettl - Iowa State - (11-9) - (3-4 Big 12)
    4. UR/UR/UR Nicholas Hucke - Missouri - (13-11) - (0-3 Big 12)

I think that Goettl is a dark horse to make a run at AA status at nationals. But he won't be training to peak in Columbia, he'll be training to peak in St. Louis. So I don't expect any upsets here. Goettl has lost to Kindig twice, once by fall and once by major. Hucke has nothing to lose, which adds a little bit of risk to the third place match. But Goettl should take care of business there and even if he doesn't has likely earned a wild card invite.

My prediction is that Goettl wrestles ot seed and takes 3rd.

All of the contested matches between Big XII wrestlers at 141:
    Luke Goettl (Iowa State) 11-9/3-4
Josh Kindig Oklahoma State 141 L FALL 1:57

    Nicholas Hucke Missouri 141 W DEC 9 - 2
    Kendric Maple Oklahoma 141 W SV 11 - 9
    Josh Kindig Oklahoma State 141 L MD 3 - 11

    Josh Kindig (Oklahoma State) 15-7/3-1
Luke Goettl Iowa State 141 W FALL 1:57
    Kendric Maple Oklahoma 141 L MD 3 - 13

    Luke Goettl Iowa State 141 W MD 13 - 1

    Julian Feikert Oklahoma State 141 W MD 12 - 4

    Nicholas Hucke (Missori) 13-11/0-3
    Luke Goettl Iowa State 141 L DEC 2 - 9

    Re: Big 12 Preview/Predictions/Results

    149 (3 Auto bids)
    1. #2/2/2 Jamal Parks - Oklahoma State - (30-0) - (6-0 Big 12)
    2. #13/13/13 Kyle Bradley - Missouri - (20-10) - (3-3 Big 12)
    3. #14/17/16 Nick Lester - Oklahoma - (19-9) - (3-3 Big 12)
    4. UR/UR/UR Joey Cozart - Iowa State - (6-11) - (0-3 Big 12)

Cozart has been one of the biggest disappointments of this redshirt freshman class. Though he is only in the lineup due to Weatherman's injury at the start of the season Joey has never seemed to have made the step up to collegiate competition. That being said, however, he is a thrower and a pinner. His best chance will actually come in the first round against Parks. Parks is a fairly conservative wrestler who wins by controlling matches rather than by takedown clinics. So if Joey can hook up a 5 point throw he might stand a chance. I'd give him more of a chance of qualifying than Hallman/Terikuna, but not much more.

Goettl has a punchers chance at 2nd or 3rd, but I don't see it happening. I think he wrestles to seed and takes 4th.

All of the contested matches between Big XII wrestlers at 149:
    Joey Cozart (Iowa State) 6-11/0-3
    Jamal Parks Oklahoma State 149 L DEC 3 - 6
    Nick Lester Oklahoma 149 L TF5 0 - 15 (5:17)
    Kyle Bradley Missouri 149 L FALL 6:59

    Jamal Parks (Oklahoma) 30-0/6-0
    Joey Cozart Iowa State 149 W DEC 6 - 3
    Nick Lester Oklahoma 149 W DEC 4 - 3
    Luke Swalla Iowa State 149 W MD 17 - 5
    Nick Lester Oklahoma 149 W DEC 6 - 2
    Kyle Bradley Missouri 149 W MD 12 - 3
    Kyle Bradley Missouri 149 W DEC 10-3

    Kyle Bradley (Missouri) 20-10/3-3
    Nick Lester Oklahoma 149 L DEC 0 - 1

    Jamal Parks Oklahoma State 149 L DEC 3 - 4

    Re: Big 12 Preview/Predictions/Results

    157: (3 Auto bids)
    1. #14/14/8 Matt Lester - Oklahoma - (19-8) - (5-1 Big 12)
    2. #12/16/12 Albert White - Oklahoma State - (25-7) - (3-3 Big 12)
    3. #16/20/11 Drake Houdashelt - Missouri - (25-5) - (3-3 Big 12)
    4. UR/UR/UR Mike Moreno - Iowa State - (4-11) - (1-4 Big 12)

Among our three guys who have a lot of mat time but are seeded 4th, Moreno is the only one that I think has a legitimate chance to steal a bid to the NCAAs. Moreno has been "not quite there" for the last half of the season and even scored an upset win over Lester in a dual. So I think he has two things going for him that give him a chance. First, I'm guessing KJ will be training for him to peak at the Big 12s, while the other guys will be training to peak at the NCAAs. Second, for Lester, White, and Houdashelt the Big 12s are just a chance to fight over where they will be seeded at NCAAs. For Moreno he'll be fighting to salvage his season. So I think Moreno has a great chance to go 1-1 and steal an slot. I'm looking for him to finally break through here and become the wrestler we thought he could be before the season started.

The home/home Big XII format this year means that the seeding is pretty straightforward and solid. But I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict Moreno wrestles above his seed and takes 3rd. Moreno also has a very, very slight chance at a wildcard if there are no upsets around the country and the committee has 4 bids to give.

All of the contested matches between Big XII wrestlers at 157:
    Mike Moreno (Iowa State) 4-11/1-4
    Matt Lester Oklahoma 157 L DEC 5 - 9

    Re: Big 12 Preview/Predictions/Results

    165 (4 Auto bids)
    1. #4/4/ Andrew Sorenson - Iowa State - (25-1) - (7-0 Big 12)
    2. #20/16/17 Bubby Graham - Oklahoma - (16-11) - (3-4 Big 12)
    3. UR/20/18 Zack Toal - Missouri - (18-9) - (2-3 Big 12)
    4. UR/UR/UR Dallas Bailey - Oklahoma State - (14-14) - (1-4 Big 12)

Just like at 125, all four wrestlers have already earned bids to the NCAAs, so this weight class will only be for seeding purposes. Simply put, Sorenson needs to continue his roll and hope that the #2 or #3 ranked wrestlers slip up so that he can slide into a 2 or 3 seed at nationals and avoid David Taylor until the finals. Sorenson has been a great Cyclone and has improved every year so I'd love to see him go out on top.

Sorenson has taken care of business all season and I don't see why that should change on Saturday. I predict he wrestles to seed and takes 1st.

All of the contested matches between Big XII wrestlers at 165:
    Andrew Sorenson (Iowa State) 25-1/7-0
    Dallas Bailey Oklahoma State 165 W DEC 5 - 1

    Re: Big 12 Preview/Predictions/Results

    174: (3 Auto bids)
    1. #3/3/3 Chris Perry - Oklahoma State - (26-0) - (4-0 Big 12)
    2. #4/5/4 Chris Spangler - Iowa State - (8-2) - (3-0 Big 12)
    3. #15/15/16 Dorian Henderson - Missouri - (18-10) - (2-3 Big 12)
    4. UR/UR/UR Oklahoma - Oklahoma - (x-x) - (0-6 Big 12)

With 3 auto bids and a scrub from Oklahoma, short of injury I am not worried about Spangler getting his shot at the NCAAs. However, there will be a lot of questions to answer. In his first match against a very solid Dorian Henderson, we'll find out how recovered Spangler really is. Not everyone comes back 100% from concussions (especially since this is like his 5th). Assuming that goes well then his finals match with Perry should be epic. I expect whoever wins that match to be the 2 or 3 seed at NCAAs and have a legit chance at winning it all in St. Louis. Basically we're finally going to find out if Spangler really deserves his top 5 ranking. I hope the answer is yes.

I think Spangler is capable of beating Perry, but he's going to need to shake off some rust first. My prediction is that Spangler wrestles to seed and takes 2nd. But that if they meet again in St. Louis Spangler comes out on top.

All of the contested matches between Big XII wrestlers at 174:
    Chris Spangler (Iowa State) 8-2/3-0
    Chris McNeil Oklahoma State 174 W DEC 9 - 5
    Chase Nelson Oklahoma 174 W DEC 12 - 11
    Dorian Henderson Missouri 174 W DEC 7 - 4

    Re: Big 12 Preview/Predictions/Results

    184: (3 Auto bids)
    1. #18/16/16 Mike Larson - Missouri - (18-4) - (4-2 Big 12)
    2. #15/15/12 Boaz Beard - Iowa State - (9-4) - (1-2 Big 12)
    3. UR/20/UR Christopher McNeil - Oklahoma State - (14-13) - (2-2 Big 12)
    4. UR/UR/UR Erich Schmidtke - Oklahoma - (17-11) - (3-3 Big 12)

There is not a whole lot of risk of Boaz not qualifying as I expect whoever gets fourth here to get a wild card. So this will be all about seeding and confidence going into St. Louis. I think Boaz has a great chance of knocking off Larson and taking 1st, which would be a great confidence booster going in to NCAAs. Pretty much all of Beard's losses have been to elite wrestlers so it would be nice to see him knock off a very good Larson to propel him into nationals.

Beard has had almost a month off to get healthy, and has put together some great matches since losing to Larson in overtime earlier in the season. I think Beard pulls off the slight upset and takes 1st.

All of the contested matches between Big XII wrestlers at 184:
    Boaz Beard (Iowa State) 9-4/1-2

    Erich Schmditke Oklahoma 184 W DEC 7 - 4
    Mike Larson Missouri 184 L SV 2 - 5

    Erich Schmditke (Oklahoma) 17-11/3-3

    Boaz Beard Iowa State 184 L DEC 4 - 7
    Chris Perry Oklahoma State 184 L DEC 1 - 7
    Tyler Christensen Iowa State 184 W MD 10 - 1
    Mike Larson Missouri 184 L FALL 6:48
    Chris McNeil Oklahoma State 184 W DEC 4 - 3

    Mike Larson (Missouri) 18-4/4-2
    Erich Schmditke Oklahoma 184 L DEC 4 - 6
Mikey England Iowa State 184 W FALL 2:36
    Boaz Beard Iowa State 184 W SV 5 - 2
    Chris McNeil Oklahoma State 184 L SV 2 - 4

    Re: Big 12 Preview/Predictions/Results

    197: (3 Auto bids)
    1. #6/5/3 Brent Haynes - Missouri - (22-5) - (4-1 Big 12)
    2. #9/UR/8 Blake Rosholt - Oklahoma State - (20-4) - (2-1 Big 12) or Cayle Byers (21-) - (3-0 Big 12)
    3. #17/16/13 Keldrick Hall - Oklahoma - (20-9) - (2-3 Big 12)
    4. #15/11/17 Jerome Ward - Iowa State - (1-0) - (0-0 Big 12)

A big question mark here is who Oklahoma State sends out. Both Rosholt and Byers are excellent wrestlers, but if it is Byers the Big 12 losses one of their auto bids. So for Jerome's sake I hope it is Rosholt. If Ward had a few matches I wouldn't be worried - with his skill and history he would be assured a wild card if he had been around the whole season. But he doesn't, so I think he needs to go 1-1 to qualify. He certainly has the ability, but I worry whether his back can hold up. I'd love to see Ward get a win or two here, AA in St. Louis, and leave ISU as an All American and as his family's first college graduate. Ward is frustrating to watch but rarely has let us down over the years.

Ward is capable of winning this weight class, but his lack of matches so far this year make predictions tough. I am very comfortable that he will at least beat Hall though. So my prediction is that he takes 3rd and I hope he surprises me by doing even better and not having to hope for a wild card.

All of the contested matches between Big XII wrestlers at 197:
    Cole Shafer 7-13 0-5
    Cayle Byers Oklahoma State 197 L MD 1 - 9

    Keldrick Hall Oklahoma 197 L DEC 5 - 11
Blake Rosholt Oklahoma State 197 L FALL 4:45

    Kyven Gadsen 0-1 0-1
    Keldrick Hall Oklahoma 197 L DEC 1-6

    Cole Shafer Iowa State 197 W DEC 11 - 5
    Brent Haynes Missouri 197 L DEC 3 - 6

    Re: Big 12 Preview/Predictions/Results

    HWT (2 Auto bids)
    1. #11/10/16 Gibson - Iowa State - (23-8) - (3-3 Big 12)
    2. UR/UR/UR Devon Mellon - Missouri - (18-10) - (3-3 Big 12)
    3 UR/UR/UR Austin Mardsen - Oklahoma State - (26-5) - (1-0 Big 12)
    3. UR/UR/UR Kyle Colling - Oklahoma - (10-11) - (0-4 Big 12)

With Gelogaev getting injured just over a week ago, Gibson should get bumped up from the #2 to the #1 seed. However, Oklahoma State pulled the redshirt off of Austin Mardsen and he is no slouch. He has multiple wins over quality wrestlers and no bad losses. If he had been around the whole season he would unquestionably be an AQ. If Gibson wants to be in position to AA he needs to take care of business against Colling and then get a win against Mardsen. They have not yet met this year so that should be a great final.

Gibson is good but tends to get dominated by elite heavies. So what we're going to find out on Saturday is whether or not Mardsen is such a wrestler. Looking through his matches this year I think the answer might be yes, but he hasn't proved it yet. So I am going to predict that Gibson wrestles to seed and takes 1st. Of the 3 guys from Iowa State that I am predicting for 1st place though I'd say Gibson is the most tenuous. But I hope he doesn't disappoint me.

    Re: Big 12 Preview/Predictions/Results

Does anyone know how if it would be possible for the Big 12 to get two wild cards at 197 if Byers is the guy for Oklahoma State at 197? If not I think that officially becomes the toughest bracket in the country to qualify out of, with at least one guy with a legitimate chance to reach the round of twelve being left home.

Wow Judoka that is an amazing breakdown of all the weights! Great job. Thanks for putting in the time to complete that list for us.

I am hoping for the best for ISU!

Me too. I didn't do a prediction on team points because I am not sure how they will be scoring points for 1st/2nd/3rd. But I think that if we wrestle well there is no reason we finish in last as we did in the dual meet season.
