    Crabgrass preventer

Ok all you agornomy majors. Quick question. Does crabgrass preventer (such as Scotts crabgrass prevenetion with fertilizer) stop all germination?

In other words if I want to interseed bluegrass it would be counterproductive to use Crabgrass preventer?

    Thanks

Correct. The herbicide will also kill your bluegrass seed.

    Thanks
Yes - you also need to be careful with timing and amount of fertilizer as it will also be hard on the germination process.

    Re: Crabgrass preventer

Just use a crabgrass preventer that contains the active ingredient Siduron (Tupersan®). This will allow cool season grasses (kentucky bluegrass) to germinate while preventing weeds. I believe it only lasts 30 to 60 days though.

Good information. I don't keep up on all the turf herbicides and Siduron will in fact work for this situation.

I'm a bit of a lawn nut. If I could go back and do college over, I'd go into Turf Management.

I did this last year, but used the top-line Scott's instead. It worked ok. I had hit the tall fescue spots in the fall and wanted to seed over those spots in the spring, but needed to control the crabgrass as my yard is still less than 5 years old.

Along the topic, but does anybody recommend a good company to use to treat the yard in Ankeny? I don't mind doing it myself, but I just don't want to spend that much time as I did last year fixing some issues I had.

I used to do everything myself. I pretty much had a 50 step program going I ran out of time to spend in the yard, so I hired A+. They have been great.

    Re: Crabgrass preventer

This is the first spring in our new house, yard was in horrible shape when we moved in last summer, weeds and some very thin spots of grass. Anyway, had it looking decent until the late season dry spell. Aerated and overseeded with a blue/ryegrass mix. Wondering when and what I should put on weedkiller this spring?

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.
