    NCAA allocations released

    NCAA released the allocations today.

    Big XII tourney gets:
    125: 4
    133: 3
    141: 3
    149: 3
    157: 3
    165: 4
    174: 3
    184: 3
    197: 3
    HWT: 2

With Z getting hurt Gibson might be the only AQ at heavy.

Edit: Just checked the RPI and coaches poll. Gibson and Mellon (Missouri) are both AQs at Heavy. The Big 12 would have had three if Z hadn't gotten hurt last week.

    Re: NCAA allocations released

I'll post my preview after the OSU-Mizzou dual on Friday. Looks like our AQs are Finch, Goettl, Sorenson, Spangler, and Gibson. But both Beard and Ward are in a very good position to steal a spot. And Moreno just needs one win to sneak in. And you never know if Cozart could get lucky and pull off a throw.

Beard is a "Bronze" standard wrestler and only isn't an AQ due to not having enough matches. So depending on what happens around the country with upsets at 184 he could get in to the NCAAs even if he takes 4th. Technically Moreno and Ward also could get a wild card, but Beard is the only one who would realistically be considered for one in that situation.

    Re: NCAA allocations released

Beard did not earn a spot at 184? Why not?

Does the Ok State wrestler have 8 matches at 184? I thought you needed 8 matches at your qualifying weight to be eligilble for a qualifying bid.

To be an AQ you must be a "silver" or "gold" standard wrestler, which means meeting at least two of the three following criteria:

Ranked in the coaches poll (Beard is 15th)

Ranked in the RPI (Beard did not meet the 17 match minimum for an RPI ranking)

Be above .700 winning percentage (Beard is 9-4, which is a .6923)

So Beard is a "Bronze" standard wrestler due only to not having 17 matches and being one win shy of a .700 record. He has multiple wins over other AQs and I fully expect him to qualify.

Finch had exactly 17 matches against D-1 opponents. So if Finch had wrestled one less match during the entire season he'd be in the same situation.

    Re: NCAA allocations released

Sorenson was our only "Gold" standard wrestler. Finch, Goettl and Gibson all meet the Coaches Poll and RPI standards but not the .700 winning percentage. Spangler meets the Coaches Poll and winning percentage standards but lacked the 17 match minimum to be included in the RPI.

Cyclone Report is saying that the OSU wrestler is the 1 that didn't get the bid at 184. Is the guys who received bids listed somewhere?

    Re: NCAA allocations released

To be considered for a wild card a wrestler must be at least "Bronze' standard. To be considered "Bronze" standard a wrestler must meet at least two of the following criteria on March 7th:
    ●● .700 Win %
    ●● Top 33 RPI
    ●● Top 33 CR (2/22/12 measure)
●● .700 winning percentage against all competition
●● One win against a wrestler receiving automatic qualification via an earned position (pre-allocated)
●● Qualifying event placement one below automatic qualification

So our AQs plus Ward, Beard, and Moreno would be eligible by these standards.

This is what the committee will look at for wild cards:
    ●● Head-to-head competition
    ●● Qualifying event placement
    ●● Quality wins
    ●● Results against common opponents
    ●● Win %
    ●● RPI
    ●● CR
●● Number of matches contested at that weight class

Based on this, barring a bunch of upsets in other tournaments Beard would likely have a good shot at a wild card. Ward just doesn't have enough matches and I can't see Moreno getting serious consideration if he doesn't win a match at Big 12s.

What is the win % for McNeil of OSU? He is 25th in coaches poll at 184 and not in RPI. Beard is 15th in coaches poll and also not in RPI.

They did reserve the right to lower or raise the .700 winning percentage as needed to get to exactly 29 qualifiers at each weight. So it is possible that they did that and made Beard an AQ. Both Beard and McNeil would be "bronze" standard without the committee doing some manipulation.

McNeil is at .550, so it does look like they lowered the winning percentage and Beard is an AQ based on that.

When you look at that list, it's really impressive. This has turnned into a 4 team conference for now, and when you look around the country at qualifying tourneys, we're doing pretty well. Wow.

Keep in mind to that both Ward and the guy that Oklahoma State pulled out of redshirt after Z got hurt would both have been AQs if not for their circumstances. So even without doing a 'Woulda, coulda shoulda' look at injuries to starters throughout the season, 33 of 40 wrestlers taking the mats next Saturday have legit chances at NCAAs, including all four at 125, 165, and 197. The Big XII is pound for pound the toughest conference around. The only other conference that even comes close is the Big 10.
