Will Nebraska coach Callahan be fired?

Listening to Sports Talk 590 in Omaha, one would have to conclude that he will be. However, AD Pedersen has to know that if he fires Callahan 3 months after giving him a raise and a contract extension, that he'll be next. So, he'll weasel out of it somehow, maybe ask Callahan to "clean house" on his staff and give Callahan himself another year.

Anyone know what his contract situation is? My vote would depend on how long and much his contract is for.

I think so. Listening to NU fans, I have to believe that they won't stand for this. I mean, what's Callahan's excuse? He has the support, the money, the facilities and the recruits. He must be trying to fail pretty hard.

Callahan just signed an extension. He got at least 3 more years tacked on to the end of his contract. Will cost them more to fire him.

Re: Will Nebraska coach Callahan be fired?

Without that contract extension he would have been gone for sure. Now that Pederson did that - and I have no idea why - it makes it difficult at best. The money wouldn't be the problem, but as someone else said, Pederson has to know it's his job that goes next.

Re: Will Nebraska coach Callahan be fired?

You can't fire a guy after extending him in the same season. You just don't do that. Nebraska fan better sack up and realize Cally will be there next year. Nebraska isn't USC or Florida anymore, them taking a few beatings isn't the end of the world.

Re: Will Nebraska coach Callahan be fired?

Bill Callahan, Steve Pedrerson & Nebraska Football = Steve Alford, Bob Bowlsby & Iowa Basketball

The parallels are erriely similar. An AD falls in love with and hires a coach. Coach has some success, but struggles after that. Fans want AD to fire coach. AD gives coach a contract extension.

Same reason why Bowlsby never fired Alford is the same reason Pederson won't fire Callahan. Alford/Callahan is Bowlsby's/Pederson's big hire. Firing him means you admit you screwed up hiring the guy. They feel it will make them look ridiculous and to paraphrase The Godfather, "A man in their position cannot afford to look ridiculous!"

So no, they won't fire Callahan. Besides we will face at least two new head coaches in the conference next year (I see both Morriss and Franchione getting fired at the end of the season. Take that to Vegas now)

Re: Will Nebraska coach Callahan be fired?

I'd be surprised if he's not fired. It's about the only way I can foresee the AD keeping his job. After getting embarrassed by USC, then laying an egg at Missouri, you are down 38-0 at home to Oklahoma St.? Not good.

He won't be fired this season. It'd cost too much and who are they going to get?

I consider this karma after they fired a 10 win coach who appeared to be classy....at least much classier than Clownahan.

That is not a hard thing to beat. Calahan may be the biggest scumbag coach since Snyder or Ericson.

    :crosses fingers:

I'd love to listen to his press conference after Iowa State beat him.

"Congrats to Iowa State and coach Chizik and his fine staff. They played tremendous today and that's a really fine football team over there."

I've talked with people in the know in Nebraska..Bo Pelini is the new coach of choice and would be a popular choice. If Callahan stays, McCarney will be offered the Def. Coordinator job.

he isn't doing the greatest but look at what Notre Dame has for recruiting money and facilities, should Weis then be out after this year, other than last weeks win over UCLA they haven't came close to winning a game.
