    Max Urich

Anybody remember Max our former Athletic Director in the 80's? I didn't follow athletics as close back then, but seems to me he got ran out of town because he said we needed to spend money on the department if we wanted to be successful. He moved on to K-State and did some great things down there.

Fast forward 20 years and Jamie Pollard is saying the same things yet he's welcomed as a hero whereas Max was a demon. Interesting how things change.

I certainly do, and I think he was highly regarded around the country. I think there is a difference though, between telling people we need it, and inspiring people to help get it done.

    Re: Max Urich

I believe that Max was never given room to attempt to inspire. The person who will never get the credit that Jamie is getting is President Geoffrey who's giving the room and freedom to do it, and probably more importantly the full support of the President. I don't believe Max ever had that freedom, and certainly not the support that Jamie's getting.

Geoffroy cut the athletic dept. budget raised tuition and gave the okay to cut baseball. He has done very little to support athletics other than talk.

Geoffroy seems to be letting JP do anything he wants, that seems pretty supportive.

im not sure about geoffroys point of view on athletics...but it would take a complete idiot to not recognize that a successful athletic dept in turn helps out the educational institution as a whole.

He had to do these things out of necessity. JP gets ALL the support he needs from Geoffrey, regardless of these things...

    Re: Max Urich

I had a lot of personal contact with Max while I was in school and he was a good guy. I just do not think he had the institutional support we have now. Geoffroy looks to me to be pretty willing to hire the right guys and let them do their jobs...what more can you ask for?

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

If memory serves, baseball was gone long before Geoffroy came around, and Geoffroy has nothing to do with tuition hikes. It was Jischke that cut the athletic dept. budget and cut baseball (as well as drove around campus in his Lexus waving at students walking to and from class on a -20 degree February day), and it was the regents that raised tuition. Geoffroy's been nothing but positive in the last couple of years I was at ISU

VD cut baseball. Geoffroy is a big supporter of isu athletics. Jischke was awful.

Yeah, good point, the president didn't cut baseball, it just happened under his watch. I was just making the point that the hatchet job done to the athletic department happened long before Geoffroy and Pollard came along - it was during Jischke and underwear-man's "reign".

And how Jischke already has a building on campus named after him is beyond me - as if he's actually deserving.

Max was a VERY good guy, and did you know he liked racing and drove a stock car under an assumed name? I guess he didn't want anyone at ISU to know about it but he drove at some of the local tracks.

    Re: Max Urich

Max was a good a.d. He did not receive anything compared to what we have today. The president of ISU thought we were pretty safe in the Big 8 so he did not really care to much what the football program did. I think Jamie saw the writing on the wall that if we did not get our act together we would be booted from the big 12. I think Geoffry understands that as well.

Max Urich was one of the best ad's in the country but presided over a disaster in ames ...football team getting blown out by highly regarded teams...fans leaving the games at haltime...fans not buying season tickets next year...

Now does that sound familiar? Sounds just like the texas game in 07!!

If JP is so inspiring how come the stands were plumb empty as the game neared its end?

I said it before and I will say it again..Ia State has the worst alumni group in all of college football...all my relatives that got degrees from ames...not one swinging you know what... has ever given one thin dime to the football program or ever went to a game!!

If Pollard can turn that around I will personally call him "the worlds greatest athletic director!!"
