    Y'all remember Mike van Arsdale?

Ran into his cousin at a basketball game the other night. He said Mike is now a trainer for one of the top MMA fighters in the world, but I don't follow MMA so apparently my brain didn't save the name for me.

Didn't Mike win a national title? I remember he had some great matches against a great Iowa wrestler (who I couldn't stand), but I thought Mike changed weights and won a national title.

Re: Y'all remember Mike van Arsdale?

He was either at Xtreme Cotoure (Randy Coutoures gym) in vegas or Greg Jacksons camp in Albuquerque, NM as the head wrestling coach. He has been a coach on the Ultimate fighter several times on Spike TV. He has been cornering fighters for quite a while in the UFC and I am sure for his guys that are working their way to fighting in the UFC.

I have been scanning some old stuff today and here is the 1987-8 media guide with the page on Mike plus a letter from Reagan and the cover.

Anybody remember the name of Mike's nemesis at Iowa? I remember him as a cocky blowhard, but he was good. I remember being at a meet against Iowa when Mike outwrestled him but the Iowa kid got away with stalling to win the match.

Never knew he wrestled at ISU! I knew him purely as one of the best grappling coaches in MMA. Very cool.

    Royce Alger.

Both Van Arsdale and KJ had some epic matches against Alger, but I think Alger always came out on top. Also unfortunately, I think you are remembering it wrong with the stalling. The ISU guys always came out fast, but faded and Alger got them in the end.

IIRC he also had a couple fights in the UFC, but has definately made a name for himself coaching. He has been involved with a lot of good fighters and a lot of well known camps. He is viewed as a great wrestler and an elite coah in the MMA world.

Lindley Kistler in '84 and '85 at 167: Kistler was NCAA runner-up and Van Arsdale failed to place in '84; they didn't meet at NCAAs but Kistler presumably beat him during the season. In '85, Kistler beat him 15-4 in the NCAA 5th place match. Kistler was seeded 2nd and Van Arsdale unseeded, so Kistler presumably beat him during the regular season as well.

Marty Kistler in '86 at 167: Kistler beat him 9-3 in the NCAA semis; Kistler placed 1st, Van Arsdale 3rd.

    Van Arsdale redshirted in '87.

Van Arsdale won NCAAs at 167 in '88. Iowa didn't qualify for NCAAs that year--I THINK it may have been Chelesvig as a true frosh, in which case Van Arsdale presumably beat him during the regular season.

I'm sure he was talking about Rashad Evans who is fighting Jon Jones for the UFC LHW belt in his next fight. Interestingly, Jon Jones went to Iowa Central and then signed with ISU and I think he may have redshirted a year here before he ended up leaving to pursue an MMA career. (which turned out to be a pretty smart idea)

I would assume Van Arsdale is now permanently at Imperial Athletics, AKA the Blackzilians, since that is where Rashad has moved. Its a pretty new gym but there are a lot of really good fighters signing up there.

Re: Y'all remember Mike van Arsdale?

    Another post on Hawk report

I think you're right, BC. I was thinking I remembered that too. Looks like Van Arsdale wrestled most of the 87-88 season at 177, then dropped to 167 for NCAAs--possibly to avoid Alger and Dan Mayo, both of whom beat him at 177 and placed 1-2 at NCAAs, while Van Arsdale placed 1st at 167.

I found a reference to Alger beating Van Arsdale 11-3 at the Iowa-Iowa State State dual in Jan 88 in which Brooks Simpson pinned Voelker, and another reference to Mayo beating Van Arsdale 4-2 at the All-Star Classic a few weeks later. That would explain it! Looks like he made the right move :)
