Which recruit do you want most?

I thought is would be interesting to speculate a little and see what recruit wrestling fans want the most!

    A. Tyler Caldwell - 165 (Oklahoma NCAA runnerup, currently at OTC on Olympic Redshirt)

    B. Ross Larson - 197 (Senior at Ankeny high school and undefeated pinning machine)

    C. David Thorn - 133 (Redshirt Soph at Minnesota, currently injured and lost spot to Chris Dardanes)

    D. Somebody else and who that would be.

I'm not saying we are after any or all 3, just a little fun.

Both - Ross Larson is a senior at Ankeny.

    Anybody that isn't already signed.

How much time does Caldwell have? We'll have our best, and most experienced team in possibly 2 years.

Larson has the most upside, with lots of time to grow. If he's really 6'4" he could be a heavy. We could use a stopper at heavy.

    No Brainer: Caldwell.

We already have Meeks coming in at 133 and while Larson might end up being good in college, we have no idea how he'll perform when he can't just outmuscle every opponent he faces.

Caldwell will be a true Junior, I think. (Has not used his redshirt)

Re: Which recruit do you want most?

My pros and cons for each

    A. Tyler Caldwell
Pros - NCAA runnerup at 165 where Sorenson is graduating, fits right into lineup
    Cons - None

    B. Ross Larson
Pros - Provides much needed depth at 197. Shafer is not a true 197 pounder, can he become one, I hope so. Also Kyven is going to be unreliable at 197, from an injury perspective.
Cons - Like Jesse Doyle, will be unproven at 197.

    C. David Thorn
Pros - fills the hole at 133 with a AA candidate and allows John Meeks to redshirt next year.
Also residual factor is it might give us more pull to get Tommy Thorn at Iowa State
Con - Would do we do his senior year - with Meeks, Thorn, Goettl, McCauley at 3 weights (133 to 149)
And needs to get a release from Minnesota

Re: Which recruit do you want most?

Unless Thorn is granted a release I see no reason to even go after him. Meeks will be at that spot in two years minimum and it would be wasted money IMHO.

Caldwell would be great. But with a healthy Spangler we have a log jam next year from 165-184. Unless Spangler cant get down to 165. Then I go with Caldwell.

I dont see how we can go wrong with Larson. We are in desperate need of a 197lber with Gadson's health always going to be a ? mark.

Unless we can get a top notch HWT then I would go there because until the young man from Michigan is on campus and proves he can keep his grades up we are in big trouble there in the years to come.

Re: Which recruit do you want most?

I assume that Spangler will stay at 174, esp. if we get Caldwell

I also agree that if Thorn doesn't get a release from Minnesota it is a waste. I'm using the assumption that Thorn gets his release and can wrestling next year.

Cadwell he has been to the finals in the NCAA's 2nd Thorn 133 is a huge hole, 3rd Jake Marlin to verbal to ISU. Ross will be nice but he may be a tweener to big for 197 and to small for hwt. Unless we feed him a lot of milk shakes for a few years.

Re: Which recruit do you want most?

I'll preface by saying this is a lot of hyperbole. We hire coaches for a reason. Have to trust them. It would be great to find a way to get both 1 & 2.

Caldwell would be great in the room, and a good leader, I think. You can't bank on a guy being back to the finals in wrestling. Only a few guys do it. Do we need him next year, though? We have Spangler (injury issue), and Weatherman won't be kept out of the line-up. I think Moreno would be more comfortable at 165. I think our year to make a legit threat for a title is two years out.

Larson seems to have great feet, foot speed, and balance. Things you can't coach. Maybe he needs technique, though. He may already be past being 197. You would have to see how much he likes lifting, and if he has freakish strength. He could be a good heavy, but service 197 early. Schafer doesn't have his athletic ability.

Doyle, I thought we had. Hope he's as advertised. I think Thorn is a real long shot.

I would hate to not see Weatherman in the lineup at 174 next year. Its been a long time since I have been this impressed during ones redshirt year. Just appears to have all the tools to be big time. Im hoping Spangler stays healthy but Im far from optimistic about that at this point. I was hoping and still am that Spangler will go to 165 if Caldwell doesnt show up in Ames.
