Please explain why K-State gets to maul the other team

Ever since we played them it's been nagging at me. Why does havng a "physical style of play" get you a free pass with the referees? Aren't the rules supposed to be pretty concrete?

In football I get it: Wisconsin is more Physical than, say Oregon. They have bigger guys, run more and stack the box on defense.

In basketball it doesn't seem like you should be able to do what they do. Why does having a reputation for it mean you get to do it?

DISCLAIMER: This is a legitimate question. Not complaining I am trying to learn the finer points of basketball because I genuinely don't understand a lot of it.

    Thanks!

It doesn't. KSU racks up a TON of fouls. I think Texas had 48 FTAs against them last week.

I think Frank might have to adjust in the near future. It looks to me like the refs aren't letting them get away with that **** anymore. Take a look at the second half of their game against Texas on Saturday.

It doesnt always happen that way though. KSU operates on the principle of 'you can't call em all', and it often benefits them.

Re: Please explain why K-State gets to maul the other team

The interesting aspect of this is that K-State often seems to think they don't get the foul calls they deserve on the offensive end. I would say that K-State would be by far the most difficult team in the Big 12 to officiate for. They play a very physical style of defense that usually includes a lot of fouls and their offense is predicated on drawing a lot of fouls. So the outcome of their games are probably more affected by officials than most teams, both to their benefit and detriment depending on the game.

Apparently the officiating crew for their game against Texas was the first group of refs that didn't get the memo....

Texas went 35-48 from the free throw line. K-State committed 33 fouls that game.

Congratulations to Rodrick Dixon, David Hall, and Mike Stuart for being the first officiating crew to not swallow their whistles during a K-State rugby game.

They also have a lot of interchangeable pieces so if they get in a foul war with most teams, the other teams will be left with just pawns on the board before KSU has used up all of their more valuable pieces. If the other team doesn't take the bait, KSU generally ends up benefitting more from the more physical play. It is a strategy that I don't like but a legitimate strategy nonetheless.

They get to because they're all whiny. Sheesh, they whine in kindergarten if they have to color a Jayhawk. Imagine how they'd howl if they got fouls called on them.

Re: Please explain why K-State gets to maul the other team

Usually theses teams get extra fouls, they are willing to accept that. After the first couple times, the non physical teams stay out of the paint and that becomes their advantage. Several years ago against Iowa, we put this guy in the middle that just clobbered anyone who drove, after quick fouls, Iowa decided to launch three pointers and stopped driving. Getting driven into floor is not fun, especially if that guy has 50 lbs on you.

Agreed. More need to do this.

My memory may be failing me, but wasn't it mainly physical play in the post for ISU during that period? KSU clearly uses the strategy at 1-5.

I mainly don't like the strategy for what it is doing to college BB. Even the women's game is becoming a maulfest.

Re: Please explain why K-State gets to maul the other team

The stats for that Texas game are hilarious.

Thomas Gipson played 8 minutes and had 4 fouls.
Jordan Henriquez played 14 minutes and had 4 fouls.
Will Spradling played 24 minutes and had 4 fouls.
Jamar Samuels played 22 minutes and fouled out.

In total K-State only had 2 players foul out but had another 4 players with 4 fouls each.

Edit: Is Tony Rampton an assistant coach for K-State?

They are the Oakland Raiders of college basketball.

I don't think the refs are turning a blind eye to this however. I had posted a link in another thread (maybe the one after the KSU game) about them being near the bottom in all of Div 1 in fouls comitted per game.
