    Wrestling question

I read in our local paper that the state dual wrestling tournament is Wednesday and the state tournament starts Thursday, both at Wells Fargo. Can this be right? Seems like a lot of wrestling for kids that qualified for both. I'm guessing that the state meet is next week, but I want to check out our Clone recruits so can somebody clarify?

I'm not from Iowa, but in Minnesota the state team and individual tournaments overlapped.

That is right in the paper. Iowa is doing it minny style this year with duals the day before traditional state. State is now back to three days. Not a great move, IMO.

I'll be interest to see if any teams hold guys out.

I assume they get bigger weight allowances at the state duals.

    Re: Wrestling question

Thanks for the info but this sure seems to give a disadvantage to the kids wrestling in both. A kid could wrestle 3 times on Wednesday and have to come back and wrestle in the state meet on Thursday. Wow!

I had heard one pound, but am too lazy to look it up in the manual.

    Re: Wrestling question

I'll bet there are some coaches that hold out their state qualifiers if they have no chance of winning the dual.

I think it's one pound on Thursday, one additional pound on Friday, and that same pound allowed for Saturday. I'm too lazy to look as well.

    Re: Wrestling question

If somebody is cutting alot of weight, the state dual competition and additional weigh in might be an issue.

    Re: Wrestling question

Southeast Polk is supposely wrestling mostly jv kids like they did in their regional dual. Iowa City West is going to wrestle their state qualifers until they don't have anything to wrestle for.

    Re: Wrestling question

Having the State Dials the same week as the tourney is beyond a horrible idea. Whoever decided to do this should be fired.

    Re: Wrestling question

If, and that's a huge IF, they still think it needs to be the same week as traditional state, they need to move traditional up to Weds-Friday (finals Friday night) then have the dual tournament on Saturday.

    Re: Wrestling question

Mentality after the State tourney will play a big factor in it. And having it before, you're going to have guys being held out for state tourney.

It probably needs to be earlier in the season and find a different way to pick teams for it.

If they must do it the same weekend, having it after is so much better. By having it before coaches are put into the situation of either wrestling their JV squad or having their starters at risk of being tired and or/hurt. So the approach the coach takes not only means that the duals don't in any way determine the best team (since you'll have lots of quality wrestlers sitting it out), but it also will put some kids at a disadvantage going into Thursday if they had to wrestle a full day of tough matches.

You also will have situations where you could have kids wrestling each other on Wednesday and then again on Thursday or even in the finals. That isn't fair to them.

Having it after is still not a good solution, but it is a much better one than having it the day before.

    Re: Wrestling question

I'm guessing our recruits and prospective recruits will not be wrestling in the duals tomorrow, and if that's the case, the state duals are pretty much meaningless and I probably won't go. This might be the worst idea anybody involved with Iowa high school wrestling ever had.
