Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

How are you that far out of the loop in your kid's life as a parent to not realize he's building grenades and bombs? What the hell are you buying him an assault rifle for? I doubt it was deer hunting.

    Re: Next Columbine prevented?

I couldn't keep a Playboy hidden from my parents when I was 14, and I went the extraordinary lengths. The parents have to be held a least partly accountable. I'm not sure what the government can do about it, other than make sure that kids and parents are completely aware of warning signs. Then everyone just has to report strange behavior, and nuts like that almost always seem to exhibit strange behavior prior to the event.

    Re: Next Columbine prevented?

The guy's mom sounds like Cartman's.

On the other hand, how precisely, is showing the police layout of all those airsoft pellet launchers relevant, except to get the anti-gun public's panties all in a wad???

Three-gun competition is the fastest growing sport in America. Lots of teenagers compete, I'm assuming, with their own rifles and shotguns. (Most states do not allow the ownership of pistols under 18 or 21.) I know the concept of legal and entertaining use of what you call "assault rifles" will make certain folks brains explode, but I don't have a problem with it, unless the 14 year old has hand-painted swastika flags, watches videos of the Columbine massacre, makes home-made hand grenades and comes to the dinner table saying "Redrum, redrum!!!"

    Update

I have some friends "in low places" that have given me some skinny on the "columbine-esque" kid with the "assault rifle".

ALL of the "assault rifles" seized by the police were fake. They are airguns that fire 6mm plastic b.b.s, designed for kids to play games with.

One of the guns was actually real, but it doesn't fit the definition of "assault rifle". It is a Hi-Point Carbine. The kid did not own ammunition for it, and as it is chambered in a pistol caliber, he could not legally buy the ammunition, though he could legally own the carbine.

The "grenades" were plastic, and stuffed with black powder, and possibly b.b.s.

Either way, the kid should fry, if he issued threats, and the parents need their collective heads examined for allowing him access to the Columbine stuff, as well as the hand-painted swastika (creepy as heck, if you ask me)

The larger question is, what are the police doing, seizing and displaying toy guns to the media? Frankly, I think whoever set that up needs a head adjustment.
