Soon, riding in cars with boys will be outlawed too.

Re: Smoking in cars with kids?

    Someone explain to me this:

We've all heard the statistics on second hand smoking. Why are people not prosecuted when deaths have occured as a result of their smoking? If it's because there could be other factors to the deaths, then are all the statistics flawed?

This makes more sense to me than the restaurant smoking ban. Kids don't have any choice but to ride in the car with their parents, so I would support the law.

I am not a smoker, but I still think the restaurant & bar smoking bans go too far.

No it is GREAT. I was just in California. You can go into a bar and breathe, it is really nice to just go wherever you want and not have to deal with those nasty smokers.

I completely agree with this one......I smoke, and I will not do so with my kid in the car, and I don't smoke in the house either.

I'm not completely sold on the statistics that are used regarding second hand smoke, because the medical community seems able to do nothing more than identify virtually everything as causing cancer. With that said, I take no risks with my child.

Re: Smoking in cars with kids?

Let's just cut to the chase. Why is smoking even legal or the industry allowed? There's indisuputable documentation of how bad it is for the smoker and those around them.

It's expensive from a medical perspective, treatment (stop-smoking) etc and is one of the few "habits" that have an direct affect on others (unlike drugs, drinking, other smokeless tabacco). Sure those have indirect affects like DUI. For instance, I have asthma as does my borther. And given the research, I have little doubt that it's due to my parents smoking while I was a child.

We're constantly doing stuff to curb it, prevent it, make it less desireable. All the while the REAL problems remain. So why do we continue to allow it, while outlawing other addictive habits?

Oh wait, big business, big money, big lobby.

On a different but same story, I was at the season finalee for the Chicago Cubs a few weeks back. Some POS woman (sorry, can't call her anything else) who was obviously about 7+ months pregnant, was sitting nearby with a beer. Now I'll take it back if God later tells me it was non-alch. Unfortunately, by her general appearance, demeanor and condition - I'm not worried about having to take it back.

Or perhaps because it is often poor public policy to outlaw actions that don't impinge on the rights of others? We tried during prohibition - it didn't work. It makes more sense to restrict and tax smoking than it does to outlaw it. The same would also probably be true of marijuana.

Really? My asthma says otherwise, as does probably thousands upon thousands of others. Or lung cancer or anyother number of ailments. How about the millions of my parents generation who were duped by the tabacco industry that smoking was acceptable, even safe, when the industry knew full well it wasn't and quite the contrary.

Any health insurance industry or medical expert will tell you the population on the whole pays for smoking costs. Smoking advocates will tell you those costs are offset by higher premiums for smokers although not remotely all of them.

Smoking is probably one of the few of these things that does DIRECTLY affect others.

    Try again.

What I love is the fact that I cannot sit in my house and legally play online poker or online blackjack because the government made it illegal.

Yet, I can do something that can give me cancer/heart disease along with directly impacting the health of others by my second-hand smoke??? Tell me how that makes sense? (And this is coming from a guy who will have a few cigarettes while drinking)

This is an argument against exposure to second hand smoke. I have no problem with laws that limit the circumstances under which people can smoke.
How about the millions of my parents generation who were duped by the tabacco industry that smoking was acceptable, even safe, when the industry knew full well it wasn't and quite the contrary.
No one is being duped anymore. Problem solved. Outlawing smoking now will do nothing to address this problem.

Smoking does not inherently affect others. If I smoke alone I am not directly affecting others. It might be argued that I am indirectly affecting others by decreasing my productivity and lifespan and by increasing my need for health care. However, eating my McDonald's double cheeseburger has similar effects. Health care costs that must be born by others can also be offset by tobacco taxes.
