Matt Moore's (NBA writer for CBS) take on Royce

Just had him on 810 here in KC discussing the draft potential of B12 players. Thinks Royce is highly skilled but needs a lot of work on foot speed and lateral movement... particularly on defense. Doesn't guard well in space right now. Draft is loaded this year which could move him down to middle of second round or lower (possibly undrafted). I think we'd all love to see Royce back for another year as fans. I'm sure he'll make a good decision either way.

BTW, thinks Perry Jones III will be undisputed draft bust.

He needs to come back and I think he will. Very mature for his age.

Would be great to have him in the lineup again next season. We could be better yet.

If he comes back next year, look out. We'll definitely be ranked preseason, I think.

I completely agree. I have never been more un-impressed with a guy with as much skill as he has. Instead of playing with his back to the basket like he should it seems like he just shoots 15 foot jumpers. He does have a decent stroke, but he could be a beast down low if he didn't play so soft.

Why not go for bust and say we will welcome him back for his senior season for a nat. championship run. Cheers!

Sounds like good news for Cyclone fans. If you thought our expectations were crazy before this season...

I agree completely. I don't think I've ever seen him play hard or hustle. Unless he decides to really bust his butt at the next level, there's no way he's a good NBA player.

Royce has foot speed. I think he can move laterally if he wants to. If he would get more help inside I think you would see his defense toughen up.

Let my Fred's Posse Ride: Georges, Naz, Hogue, Bryce, Nader, Monte, Matt, and McKay.

Yep. Love that lineup. Especially with energy, defense and experience coming off the bench with McGee, Bubu and Booker.

Hopefully one of the young guys forces his way into that lineup as well.

Re: Matt Moore's (NBA writer for CBS) take on Royce

I think he's right that Royce is not a great defender and maybe his disorder could have something to do with that. But I think the main thing Royce needs to become a high draft pick is a mid range jumper. Even a step back jumper down low would add a lot to his offense, and I'm hoping he will be at ISU developing that over the next year or two.

If Royce could turn over either shoulder and put up a jumper in the lane, he would be unstoppable in the college game. He will need more range for the NBA game. He doesn't need to score to help an NBA team, however.

He can move well straight ahead... as we've seen when he gets to the rack. I agree with Moore on lateral quickness. He's let his guy get around him so many times when he's in the paint. It could be partially technique.

The dude is so big and strong...side-to-side movement is tough for those guys. His point was that for Royce to make it, he'll be a three or stretch four. Those guys have to defend out to the three point line and defend dribble penetration... which he will struggle with against NBA players.

There are drills to improve that quickness. He may need to redefine his body type a little bit too to facilitate that development.
