LJ and KO only ISU players invited to combine

I really think one of CPR's biggest hurdles to overcome is to get his senior players more attention coming out of school and a better shot to get drafted. Let's be honest, if Hicks or Benton played for a bigger name school they would have gotten an invite to the Combine.

It's a tough thing to overcome for sure but will do wonders for recruiting.

Actually I don't think so. I wouldn't have expected them to get invited.

CPR needs to get better players, that will draw attention. It's not a marketing or PR issue, although that certainly can factor in. But I'm sure Paul is doing all that he can. What we really need is more LJ and KO type players.

Hicks was average at best, so I'm not that surprised with him not being invited.

This. Benton and Hicks had an outside shot at getting an invite to the combine. Doesn't mean they can't still get drafted or end up on an NFL roster.

Iowa had Gettis and Zucivecs (sp?) invited. I don't think they are any better than Hicks was. It definitely matters what program you are coming from. Iowa has a tradition of sending quality lineman to the NFL. Iowa State and CPR have to start doing that as well. It will help a ton with recruiting

Ok guys, how about this one. Last year Colin Franklin wasn't invited and that Hawk TE was.

If you guys don't think that the name of the program matters on who gets invited, I don't know what to say. We have to get to that point as a program

Of course there are a handful of programs that are highly regarded when it comes to developing NFL players, and Iowa is one of them. However, this is because Iowa has a lot of guys in the NFL (some drafted, some not).

ISU on the other hand has very few, not because of our name, but because we've had very few players that are capable of playing at that level in our program in the past 10 years.

The bottom line is that for this to change, we need to recruit better players.

I'm not arguing any different. I'm simply saying that its something that CPR will have to change in order to really turn this program around. More guys get drafted or get the opportunity and the HS kids take notice.

Iowa is getting 5-7 guys drafted a year and they haven't been any good. 7-6 and 8-5 the last two years and they are still sending 7 guys to the combine and their 3rd best LB on a horrible defense. It's not b/c he was good and it's not because he was a better recruit. It's because Kirk Ferentz is known for getting guys ready for the NFL. Hopefully CPR can do the same

You said it yourself. We don't have the tradition that Iowa does of sending players to the NFL. We've had a few, but not nearly as many as Iowa. Until we prove that we have NFL quality talent year in and year out, we're not going to get as many players invited.

That's my point in this thread. Certain schools have a tradition that gives some of their players the benefit of the doubt going into the draft. ISU doesn't have that tradition. It's a tall task for CPR for sure. My main point is that Benton and Hicks would have gotten the benefit of the doubt if they were on the fringe if they played for certain programs. Hopefully CPR can get us to a point where the NFL scouts see our players and invite the fringe guys

Keep in mind Sims was invited to the combine last year and wasn't drafted. He even put up some of the best numbers if I remember right.

Iowa is a top 3 program in the nation in producing TEs. They are Tight End U.
