    College football playoff

Here's a truly refreshing new take on a possible college football playoff system conceived by an ISU grad and friend of mine.

    Re: College football playoff

That is a really interesting take. I have a feeling people would balk, as the amount of byes isn't set in a given year, but I don't really see a problem with that. Basically guarantees that any squad who has a regular season worthy of getting a national title shot will get to take that shot.

In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection.

Yeah I guess the problem is the byes. Some years you have 4-5 more games than other years. Money, sponsors and what not will have issues with this.

Pretty fair system IMO. Good except for logistics of changing amount of playoff games.

And one of the great things about college football\baskeball is that they dont.

    Re: College football playoff

This could have some flaws too, I just can't think of anything too unfair with this system. If I'm understanding it right, if LSU would've lost to Georgia in the SEC championship game and still been ranked 1 or 2, they would've still qualified (along with Alabama, another not-SEC champion team) and Georgia (even as SEC champs) would've been left out because they had 2 losses?

As far as i'm concerned, drastic change isnt needed. One simple change would fix one of the more glaring issues: if you havent won your conference, you're not in the title game. Simple as that.

I agree with college basketball. However, when there is clearly a problem in the championship format for college football (we wouldn't be talking about alternate playoff scenarios if there wasn't a problem with the BCS), how can it be a great thing that there aren't home site playoffs?

What do you see as negatives about having on-campus games that determine the champion?

90% of it is a manufactured 'problem' . Most of the time its really hard to argue with the two that are selected, and adding a conference champion requirement would fix the biggest error.

Negatives of on site? A lot of northern sites arent built for winter games, its not a neutral site so you have a clear home-field advantage, the fans lose out on the whole bowl game vacation experience, etc.

    Re: College football playoff

    ^^
Valid reasons. However, I think higher seeded teams earn the home field advantage. Think of it like the NFL playoffs. Clearly Green Bay had a home field advantage this year, as did the Patriots. The Giants beat GB on their field and got to the Super Bowl and the NY fans got to have the bowl game experience. I think a case could be made for teams losing in the first round of a college playoff system to still qualify for a bowl game. Does the home site playoff game diminish that bowl? Yes, it probably does.

Probably a good rule to have but if you followed the system presented in this thread, it would only eliminate Georgia in 2007, Alabama & Texas (only because they were in a three-way tie in the South division) in 2008, and Alabama in 2011. None of those years would get down to a perfect 1 vs. 2 championship game or 4 team, +1 scenario with the conference championship rule. So that rule alone won't fix the system.
