    Clutch Clones

It has been talked about a little bit but I decided to look closely at the numbers of it all...Iowa State has been executing very well down the stretch in order to win basketball games. It is no surprise that the numbers back that up...

Those offensive numbers against Kansas and Kansas State are especially absurd when you consider that KU and K-State are the two best scoring defenses in the league.

What are we doing differently in the last six minutes?

It would be hard to necessarily pin it down to one or two things but a few things from memory...

It really is a matter of execution. More timeouts are used and plays are specifically drawn up (especially in that Kansas game). I didn't tally it but there have been very few turnovers in the last 6 minutes of the past 4 games as well. Scoring is also helped when ISU has won 3 of the games and gets a few extra trips to the free throw line, but that is just part of it and isn't the only reason the scoring is so much improved.

I don't have the capability, but I would suspect that late in games scoring efficiency naturally rises for all teams (on average) because of the increased focus and what not.

    Re: Clutch Clones

    Awesome stuff, Kirk.

We are doing this year what we could not do in the previous years.

Royce, Scotty, CA, Babb, Melvin and Tyrus have all hit some HUGE shots at the end of games and we are getting stops and rebounds on the defensive end. It's a combination of good coaching and having multiple guys who can and are not afraid to take a big shot. The opposing team can't key on one guy when the guys mentioned above have all hit big shots in crunch time this year.

    Re: Clutch Clones

Another big difference is we aren't having one guy standing at the top of the key dribbling 350 times before dashing to the hoop as we have the past 3-4 years... Nice to see some ball movement early in the shot clock.

I think a lot of times it comes down to making sure we get Royce a touch down low.

McGee's shot against OSU to tie it up with 17 seconds left is the clutch play of the year imo.

I agree. Thankfully the ref didn't give Fred the timeout he was calling.
