Question regarding 12 men on the field

I am sure there is an answer for this, but as much as I watch football I've never seen it happen. If the penalty for having 12 men on the field is only 5 yards and the time the play takes still comes off the clock, why would the defense not put 12 (or more) people on the field if the game only has say, under 40 seconds to go, and the offense has to drive the whole length of the field?

I was thinking the same thing. Seems like a good plan to put 12 on there when they need 10 yards and not much time to give.

I'm sure the officials have ways of dealing with intentional too many men on the field, I'm just too lazy to go look it up.

I was assuming as much, I did some searching, but couldn't find anything.

Perhaps start calling delay of game on the defense. Dead ball foul.

It was the best penalty committed all night, 5 yards for 8 seconds.

Yeah there's gotta be something. Delay of game on the defense is a good guess. But if they did it intentionally, good timing.

Re: Question regarding 12 men on the field

Didn't take the time to look up the actual rule, but I believe the distinction is whether the 12th man participates in the play. In this case since he was running off when the ball was snapped, 5 yards. If 12 men actively participate in the defensive play then it is 15 yards. Could be wrong, but that's how I remember the rule being.

This. You can still move the ball on 12 guys. Put a ton out there to really make this work.

I would be delay of game...or similar to the rules they have if the crowd is "too loud." The officials can stop the play clock and let the offense stand around until they determine the line can hear the calls.

Or at least that was a rule in the past.

I've only ever seen that called once - Iowa at Ohio State about 20 years ago...
