There were some rumors of the Big 10 having an interest in adding Iowa State because of the hockey program. All Iowa State would need is a suitable standalone hockey arena capable of seating 6 to 7k fans. Penn St is going D1 hockey next year and their new arena costs $80M.

I've been told JP is supportive of a D1 hockey program if someone is willing to donate $80-$100M similar to the support Penn St received. Jaime was involved with Wisconsin's hockey program and knows how popular hockey is.

If ISU went D1 with hockey, a scholarship women's program would also have to be added.

My first year at ISU (1978) they played all their games at Hilton as mentioned above and then put the BB court over the ice for games. It was great going to hockey games at Hilton. About 1979 they built the skating rink for the ISU Hockey club south of the towers and had most of the games out there after that. They were great but not the same as the games in Hiltoon.

I was at that hockey match too, I think the Air Force Academy was the opponent. They beat ISU by a lopsided score something like 9-2.

I'd certainly do it before baseball.

I was at ISU about the same time, actually starting in 79, and I do remember that even after the ice arena was built they would have one or two games a year at Hilton. Even remember going to a game there where each period they gave a keg to the group that yelled the loudest, we won one and should have won another, but they wanted to spread the wealth. They were always fun to watch.

I know for sure there was at least one hockey game at Hilton when Orr was coach between 80 and 85. The main thing I remember is that those hockey players have some major BO after the first period.

JP- let them play one game next year and I will buy a ticket. Maybe follow it with Disney on ice!

Is hockey still a club sport at ISU?

I attended a hockey game in Hilton while an undergrad. (circa 1989). There's room.

I took my 8 yr old son to that Air force match, got player signatures afterwards. Hockey locker rooms were at west end of Hilton, now all gone.

    Re:Hockey in Hilton? Ever happened?

My Dad took me to an ISU hockey game at Hilton when I was a kid. They were hosting the final four for the club teams, and we ended up losing to Illinois if I remember right. It was a very cool experience (no pun intended), and I hope it happens again

Re: Hockey in Hilton? Ever happened?

My older siblings who went to ISU during the 70s have told stories that ice time at Hilton was a premium -- the hockey team practice and games took precedence then ice skating classes then broom ball -- not uncommon to have broom ball games in the middle of the night 1 -2-3 AM!!! Go to the bar and then go play broom ball in Hilton. I'm not sure of the years, but I beleive Hilton was the only place for ice in Ames until the first ice rink was built -- I beleive it is now storage after the new arena was built.

Every hockey game in Hilton I have been to the floor seats are removed to make room for the ice. The best intermission entertainment -- the Ames hockey club young ones playing --talking the youngest probably 5-6-7 year olds. That has to be a memory those kids will never forget.

WRONG!!!! Great venue for Hockey -- Johnny Orr stopped hockey in Hilton after he played and lost a game played on top of the ice. Look it up.

I worked in Hilton from 79-83 as student taking care of the concession stands. Before Johnny came, Lynn Nance complained about the floor being cold for BB practices and games. They laid the BB floor over the ice; there were sheets of something between the ice and the wood floor of course. I don't remember Johnny saying that for sure about no more ice; but that would make a lot of sense that he did.

The coils to make ice would of course still be in the concrete in the floor; I assume the refrigeration equipment is still there to pump cool stuff through those coils? Don't they still do a show like Disney on Ice or something like that that needs ice?

They used to open Hilton up one night (a week i think) for students to come in and ice skate back then. I still have the pair of ice skates I bought when that program was ended; about the time Johnny came.
