Best Group of Coaches in ISU History?

Are we in the midst of the best overall group of coaches our athletics department has ever seen?

FB - Paul Rhoads - 2 Bowls in 3 Years

MBB - Fred Hoiberg - The Mayor, Back in NCAA Tourney Hunt in 2 years

VB - Christy Johnson-Lych - Competing For Conference Titles, High NCAA Seeds

WBB - Bill Fennelly - Down this year, but consistantly puts together a tournament team

Wrestling - Kevin Jackson - I don't know alot about wrestling, but we are definately in a down year, not sure how the future looks. Coach Jackson is a great guy, olympian, and loves ISU.

I think we have a plethora of top notch coaches right now. High character people that really seem to care about the university. We need to enjoy these times because we don't get it alot here at ISU.

    Go State.

Change the thread title to "Best Athletic Director in ISU history" - JP's running of the Athletic Department has been the key to ISU's recent success.

    The bowls were not consecutive.

To your point, yes we have some real good ones. And a good AD as well.

Re: Best Group of Coaches in ISU History?

We are on the cusp of an ISU Athletics Golden Age.

Now I am curious. Who does everyone think were our best coaches ever (FB and BB mainly) and who were the corresponding coaches of the other sport (FB/BB)?

Have we ever had really good coaches in both sports?

DMac had some pretty dang good years that coincided with Eustachys success and a bit of the spillover success of Morgan. I remember that fondly because I was a student at the time.

Other than that, football hasn't done much. ISU was a football graveyard during Johnnys years if I remember correctly.

I think the current coaches have the potential to do much more together however.

Football: To compare with Earl Bruce & J Majors, we need to get to a decent major bowl - that used to be considered a Jan Bowl, but today probably means a big payout.

Basketball: Not only do we need to get to the Dance, we need a good Sweet-16 type run. To compare with JO, TF & LE - or Wayne for that matter.

Wrestling: need a top 4 final ranking, NCAA championship and a couple All-Americans just to get this program to where it should be.

Just imagine if we still had Cael. We easily would, but I already think we do anyways. Sorry but the only two sports I care about our Football and MBB. I know I'll get the crowed where CPR and Fred haven't achieved much yet. They are clearly on their way though and I have no doubt they will be great here. Also the womens sports seem to be doing well also, so yes I'd say we have the best set of coaches together ever here.

Re: Best Group of Coaches in ISU History?

We do have some very good coaches right now, but you can look back and see some other times when ISU was at the pinnacle as well.
    One such group...
    MBB- Eustachy
    WBB - Fennelly
    FB - McCarney
    Gymnastics - Kindler

That is the point of this thread...a group of highly successful coaches. We are on the cusp of good things. Hoiberg is showing signs...needs to get some teams deep in the tourney and win some Big-12 titles before you can put him ahead of several other coaches. CPR - needs to have a few seasons of 8-9 wins to get him in the ranks of Bruce or Majors. Fennelly already owns WBB and is the Crown Prince of the ISU athletic dept. Christy has definitely proven her worth with the VB team and is quickly on the way to making herself as valued as Fennelly (yes, that's a strong statement, but I believe its true)

2000 was probably our greatest year athletics wise.

9-3 in football with Bowl Victory
32-5 in MBB with Big 12 Tournament/Regular Season Championships
27-6 in WBB with Big 12 Tournament/Regular Season Championships
    Big 12 Gymnastics championship

A little premature, especially with MBB. I'm not saying Freddie can't get the best we've had but he just doesn't have anything to show as of yet. As others have said during Danny Mac's run coincided with some really good men's and womens bball teams. This is a question that should be brought up in 2 or 3 years.

Re: Best Group of Coaches in ISU History?

I appreciate the sentiment of the OP, but I think he is a little early on this question. A lot of people point to the Mac years as great Football years, but don't remember the 60's and 70's when Iowa State football was the boss. Earl Bruce and Johny Majors are probably our best football coaches to date.

Re: Best Group of Coaches in ISU History?

I think this might be in the running as the answer:

    Johnny Majors - FB
    Maury John - M BB
    Harold Nichols - W
    Ed Gagnier - M Gym

No div 1 women's BB at ISU at the time.
