Wow, would be cool if we could somehow honor him as well!

Could be another great recruiting tool as well.

Yeah, isn't it interesting how so many schools try to hint in the recruiting process that a largely white, rural campus is behind in race relations. I think this demonstrates that ISU has a history of being ahead of a good portion of the country for decades.

That's what I meant, but you said it more eloquently.

    Re: Holloway Smith

What an excellent story. Thanks for posting that link.

The barring of play at Missouri is not surprising, but I continue to be proud of ISU's history as a progressive institution.

I also find it interesting that we had strained relations with Nebraska, even in the 20s. The way that Nebraska decided not to play us for 2 years because of some perceived dirtiness sounds almost Hawkeye-ish:

"(Nebraska officials) feel quite strongly that the best thing under the circumstances is not to play Ames in football until conditions are such as to assure the team different treatment than that received last week."
Also, the article mentions that Holloway wore #16. Good legacy for Barnett to follow.

    Re: Holloway Smith

He could not play in the game against Missouri because they did not allow colored players to play against them. Also in High School I was 6'2 255. I would have dominated back then.

    Re: Holloway Smith

Great article. Hollaway Smith sounds like a great person. Interesting how some other schools did not want us to play with our best player.

There was chart posted on Buzzfeed a few days ago showing which states have been on the right side of history for important issues. Iowa came in 5 out of 5. Go Iowa! Way ahead of your time! (Side note: Missouri, 4 out of 5 on the wrong side of history. So close geographically, so far away mentally)

Now you've done it. I'm betting 19 posts before this ends up in the cave.

Ha, I'm sure there are a lot of people here who are opposed to women's right to vote.

But a seriously cool story about Smith, and you're right, Iowa doesn't take a backseat to any state on important issues. There's no way it can be accurately used against ISU in the recruiting process.

    Re: Holloway Smith

Wow, Holloway Smith like Jack Trice sounds like another good man that helped pave the way for black athletes and the civil rights movement that came decades later. Thanks VeloClone for this great story which I'm sure very few people know about. It's another story to give us great pride in our football program and history of our university.

Another interesting thing is that Kansas ends up on the "right side of history" on the slavery issue on your link. However, their tactics were, to put it generously, questionable. Look up the history of "Jayhawks" and their raids on Missouri. Not a proud moment in history.

When re-reading my post it sounds like an attack on you. Please don't take it that way; I just think it is an interesting historical factiod.
