    Official hurt during KU courtstorming

    Official injured in Ames 'melee'

Hundreds of students stormed the court after the final horn and, in the process, injured ref Darron George. "After coming off the court, our players were tending to the official, Darron George, who was down. He was in so much pain," Self said. "From what we were told, he broke his arm trying to push people off in the melee." ... The Big 12 said Sunday George "suffered a hand injury" and is OK.

It's too bad, but the officials should get off the floor.

Or maybe the refs should move out of the way.

Too bad this didn't happen at half time, he seemed to have no problem calling blocking fouls and pointing in Kansas' direction on balls that went out of bounds.

How is it hard to go over to the side where the old people sit? Not very.

The problem is related to the way that refs try to leave the court. They run too fast and off-balance rather than just winding their way at a more manageable pace. They often bump into people, swerve, and trip, even when the crowd hasn't rushed the court.

Just put a cop with each of them after the game and arrest anybody who harasses them.

Indeed. Its not like they suddenly storming the court. They were showing that the court was going to be stormed with quite a bit of time left.

Its an accident, it happens. Probably just as likely to get hit by a car in the parking lot.

It's not like it was a last second shot. We were up 8 and KU was going to let the clock run out. There was plenty of time for the officials to move to the side.

Re: Official hurt during KU courtstorming

Who knows if this is actually true, but I heard that evening that he and the other refs were warned at half that students WOULD storm the court if ISU won, and all were given specific instructions on exactly where to go and what do when the clock ran out to avoid injury and this particular ref didn't follow those instructions. Once again, take this with a grain of salt.
