Tired of hearing KU is lacking talent

Don't get sucked into that argument. I've read it on this site more than a few times. They're not as deep this year, but their starters, as a group, are plenty talented.

    Per Rivals

    Withey - 36th overall, 8th positional
    Taylor - 77th, 11th
    Robinson - 31st, 10th, likely top 5 draft pick
    Johnson - 24th, 4th
Relaford - 70th, 15th, top ten as a junior, best ball handling guard in class by Slam Magazine

That's an average of a top 50 recruit at every position with four juniors and one senior. I know rankings are subjective. But no one can argue that KU is getting by this year with average players. Collectively as a starting unit, few teams in college basketball line up with more talent. We beat a really good team.

Re: Tired of hearing KU is lacking talent

I agree. Most teams would kill to recruit like that. Most coaches can win a lot of games with talent like that. I think it can be argued that Bill Self's job is easier because of the perception, even among their own team, the talent is down. So now they think they have to work and focus extra hard to compensate for the "lack of talent" this year. I think Bill is having an easier time of building chemistry. Players don't have to worry about sharing the rock with another super star or playing time.

How does this compare to the average KU year? KU will always get plenty of talent, the qualifier is usually added that this is a low year 'for KU'

Seems like there always has to be a reason why ISU pulls off a win against a top 25 team. Announcers always start out with, ISU outplayed them tonight, BUT.....Kansas is down this year (even ranked at #5)....Texas is down this year (football two years ago, which happened to be true)....Okie State is focused on other things today (football this year).

The BUT negates the positive thing they just said about how well ISU played that game on that night.

Re: Tired of hearing KU is lacking talent

It's going to happen when we aren't winning consistently in football and Basketball. If we'd have won one of our last 3 games in football, in hindsight, the OK St. win wouldn't have been looked at as big of a deal. And if we wouldn't have lost to UNI and Drake, I don't think they'd be looking for excuses in the Kansas game as much. If you don't follow these teams on a daily basis, you don't realize the progress they've made in the last couple of years. Going from always getting blown out by the big guys to competing to them.

Exactly--relative to what KU is used to, they might have a dearth of talent...but just about every other team would kill to have guys like they do.

KU was undefeated in conference coming in, and has some big wins. Just because ISU beat them does not make them bad. Ridiculous. They're a damn good team.

Re: Tired of hearing KU is lacking talent

KU def has less talent than they normally do. They do not have deep bench this year (that's why they are not as good as they normally do).

Teahen, Wesley, and Tharpe (2011-2012) vs. Robinson, Releford, Johnson (2010-2011). Pretty obvious which team has better bench.

Aren't they missing at least 2 players (freshman?) due to eligibility issues who were supposed to be big time players?

While on live TV, Ford used a vulgar term to describe a private part of the female anatomy, adding that he was “happily married” and “got more than enough to eat at home.”

Re: Tired of hearing KU is lacking talent

I felt like ISU looked more athletic than KU as an overall team. Robinson seemed like he was really good though.

They're the least talented KU team in years. I believe that was Gottlieb's comment, and I think he is completely correct. The teams the last few years had multiple 1st Rd picks in the twins and Robinson. They had Selby who was a 2nd round pick. The years before that they had Aldrich, Xavier Henry, and Sherron Collins. Before those guys you had the teams with Arthur, Chalmers, Brandon Rush.

I mentioned their bench depth. I was talking about their starting five. I would take Johnson/Relaford over Reed/Morningstar. I also don't think there's a huge dropoff from the Morris twins to Robinson/Withey. There's a dropoff there, but you have Taylor playing much better this year and the + with Johnson/Relaford.

Robinson and Johnson played a combined total of 12 minutes in their loss to VCU last year. Relaford didn't play at all.

    Here's an ISU comparison:

Royce White: 19th Overall, 2nd Positional
Chris Allen: 33th Overall, 5th Positional
    Melvin Ejim: Unranked Nationally
    Scotty: Unranked Nationally
    Chris Babb: Unranked Nationally

Anthony Booker: 43rd Overall, 14th Positional
    Tyrus McGee: Unranked Nationally

Kansas starting 5 is plenty talented. They just have no depth when they normally have talent that is 10 deep

I disagree. Robinson and Taylor are as good as any post/guard combo they've had. Their national championship team was obviously more talented. I still think they'll win the league and make a deep tournament run.
