My take on the KU/ISU game...

Ok so I don't want to pee on anyone's cheerios but to me this really didn't seem like a really really huge mega big deal. I mean look everyone was predicting the upset...and not in that "I just drank a fifth of Cyclone Kool-aide" way. Don't get me wrong I was certainly pumped but I kind of expected to see this. I wouldn't have been ****** at a close loss but after the way we played at Phog my view of this team has changed. We can play with anyone.

Anybody else feel this way? Great win and a long time since the last one this big but I'm kind of happy that this team has shown enough for me to "expect" it at Hilton.

I thought if we played decent at all in the first half we could have blown them out.

Re: My take on the KU/ISU game...

I think people are just excited that ISU MBB is to the point where we can hang with anyone we play on the road, and "expect" (maybe predict is a better word) a win against ranked teams in Hilton.

It has been a while since we could do that (Stinson/Blalock's sophomore years I'd say).

Yep, this thread has just been pwned.

Definitely, after someone called it one of the Top 10 wins at Hilton I was going to start a rebuttle before I realized it was true. It just didn't feel like a major upset, it was a good team that we should beat.

Big wins don't necessarily mean the biggest upsets.

If that were the case, the biggest wins would not mean anything.

Re: My take on the KU/ISU game...

My take on it is I believe we have just as much talent as them this year, so no its not an upset when comparing talent. But it is a big deal when you consider the fact that KU knows how to win and we as a program are in the midst of learning how to beat good teams.

And of course this is huge in helping our momentum towards a berth in the dance.

I guess ya maybe that's what it is for me...doesn't feel like a huge UPSET...but it is definitely a huge win.

Re: My take on the KU/ISU game...

In the past we have had to play lights out for the entire game to get a win like this. The fact that we won without playing a perfect game speaks volumes about our talent on this team. It seemed to me that we had more talent 1 through 8 than Kansas. I don't ever remember that being the case. We have a lot of potential, we just need to keep improving.

We beat a top five-rated team. Call it an upset or not, its a big win for a program that, after losses to UNI, Drake and a really bad scare against Mississippi Valley State, people were already writing us off for any chance at the big dance.

I think this is a huge win. It puts us back on the map after years of awful basketball. It gives a signature win for our resume after years of not even having a resume. It gives us all a sense of pride and satisfaction after years of disappointment and frustration.

Re: My take on the KU/ISU game...

KU missed a LOT of good looks in the last 7 mins or so. Wide open looks or bunnies that they just flat out missed. But we also had a LOT of unforced turnovers. Neither team played particularly well and polished, IMO.

My biggest takeaway from this game is how we responded to adversity numerous times throughout the game. We never let the game get out of control, and when KU would punch us late, we would counter punch them back. KU scored on 3 straight possessions to cut the game to 3 between the 4:30 and 2:15 marks of the game, and we answered right back with our own basket every time to keep it out of reach. We scored on our last 8 possessions. This team showed a lot of guts to close this one out, when that had been our problem in the past (Mizzou and @KU).

^^ This, in spades. The way they closed the game on Saturday reminded me of the great Fizer-Tinsley teams. That team knew how to play when the game got tight. I think our guys this year might be pretty close.

And who answered every time in the clutch? Royce White.

I agree, I expected them to win and when they won it was still a big win for the program. Hard not to see this one coming with the way we played them down in their house.

Agreed. I thought it was a great win, but it didn't shock me. We could have EASILY beaten Missouri (#2 now) and we could have EASILY beaten Kansas @Kansas the first time. I was happy, and I told a few of my non ISU friends like "wooo ISU won" but nothing more.

It wasn't like when we beat OK State and I was in shock about it for the next 3 days, checking Twitter to see the buzz about Iowa State football, etc.

So yeah, completely agree with you.
