    ATV's, Snowmobiles, Dirt Bikes, etc

Growing up I lived on an acreage in northern Iowa and there was nothing better than just pulling out of the garage/barn and raising hell for a few hours.

When I was in 6th or 7th grade I got my first. It was a Honda 110 3 wheeler. This is the vehicle that sold me on Honda reliability. I don't ever remember changing the oil, plugs, or really anything. I rolled it a few times, the knobbies were completely bald by the end but the thing never missed a beat. My friends and I would run them in creaks where water was up to the exhaust.

With my Hy-Vee courtesy clerk money I then bought a Yamaha Blaster 200(love 2 strokes) ATV. I also had a $500 Yamaha 338 snowmobile. It was slow as hell and the gas would freeze up or the belt would fall off usually about 5 miles out in some field.

About 10 years after getting out of college and living in Des Moines I was yearning for some off road fun. I bought a Bombardier DS650. It was fun but just not the same. Having to trailer 50 miles every time you want to ride sucks. Wrecking also hurts a lot more when your older.

I'd love to some day buy a dirt bike but I can't see my wife ever wanting to move out in the country.

What do you currently have? What have you owned.

You really need a KLR650. Its basically just a dirt bike that is street legal. Ride it to where your going to ride off road.

Nice bike. There are a couple of KTM's I've considered.

The problem is that these types of bikes usually don't work for me. I like buying bikes that kill in one area rather than just being average in a bunch of areas.

The people that own these dual sports must like them though. They always seem to be the bikes with the most miles on them.

We had a Polaris Sportsman 500 growing up. Nothing special, the main reason we got it was to check/work on fence, pick up rocks, etc, but we had a lot of fun with it riding around and pulling each other on sleds in the winter.

Re: ATV's, Snowmobiles, Dirt Bikes, etc

KLR650 is OK as long as you stay on the road. They are basically street bikes in dirt bikes clothing. Heavy (400 lbs filled up with fluids) and having a fixed ferring(sp) on a dirt bike is just not right. I have an XR650L Honda and absolutely love that bike. You can do all sorts of mods to the engine(which I have) and it is still heavier than a motocross bike but a heck of a lot more nimble than the KLR. From a list of the best street legal dirt bikes down to the street bikes dressed as dirt bikes are as follows.

KTM EXC 525 (I think) is just barely legal. But for $10K you could buy 1 of each of the list below and still have some money left over.
    Honda XR650L - I love mine
Suzuki DR650 - Fine machines, but they don't make them new I don't think any longer. Now the biggest is a DR400
Kawasaki KLR650 - Good on the road, sad off road.

Honda and the Suzuki are about equal other then the Honda sits higher.

Why would you have to trailer a bike 50 miles to ride? There's lots a places within just outside of Des Moines or in Des Moines that a lot of people ride.

Re: ATV's, Snowmobiles, Dirt Bikes, etc

We had a little 50 Yamaha when we were younger. After college I bought a Yamaha R6 and sold it a year later. I guess I never really got into bikes that much.

We had numerous ATVs growing up and had all kinds of fun with them. The best was riding along/in the river.

Snowmobiling was always the sport in my household. I had a Yamaha Enticer 300 when I was real young. After I grew out of that my dad let me ride the 93 AC EXT which was a huge step but I eventually got sick of that. Then I could ride the 98 ZR. When I was 18 I got a brand new AC ZL 600 on the cheap. After that we started going to the mountains in the winter so we adjusted our snowmobiles accordingly. I has a Crossfire 6, then a 7, then I rode an M1000 and now I have an M8 that I love. I don't plan on changing very soon.

    I'm on Twitter too: Tre4ISU

    Or so I have read.

I have a couple John Deere snowmobiles (1970's 300 and 400). They were a lot of fun, but haven't run them for 10 years...need some work, probably not much to them, but the time spent on them would take away from my CF time.
I bought a Bobcat 3400 diesel UTV this fall. Not the fastest UTV, but is really handy on the farm!

Re: ATV's, Snowmobiles, Dirt Bikes, etc

There is a snowmobile "route" on the other side of the street. Kind of confusing being there is no snow and they just drive on the road. The riders around here are annoying and feel the need to rev their engines up and down the street until about 1am. Therefor, snowmobilers are lumped under the same category as crotch rocketers in my book:

Those are not crotch rockets that are in your picture. Those are Harley riders.

Re: ATV's, Snowmobiles, Dirt Bikes, etc

Started with a Kawasaki 100 "Trail Boss", got into moto-x and got a Rickman 125 mx, moved on to an Ossa Stiletto and raced that. Later got a 125 Rickman Enduro that I rode to/from, on/around the ISU campus. Still have that one and last year picked up a totaled 1984 Honda V30 Magna. $500 & a month on ebay to get the Honda going. It's a great commuter bike. I think I'm too old to play hard in the dirt any more.

Re: ATV's, Snowmobiles, Dirt Bikes, etc

I started out with a Harley Davidson/AMF SX175 as my first dirt bike, also rode a Honda Odyssey, not the van, 110 Honda ATC. Got a XR250R when I turned 16 and loved that bike. About 4 yrs ago I got a DR350 street legal bike and a year later upgraded to my dream bike since they came out in 1994, the XR650L, which is now the same bike in 2012 as it was back then minus the BNG's or bold new graphics. Bulletproof air cooled engines. Had some street bikes during that time but I've always have been partial to dirt bikes.

Re: ATV's, Snowmobiles, Dirt Bikes, etc

Started off when i was 10 with a Kawasaki KDX80, then when i was 14 I got a Yamaha XT 350 (GREAT and simple bike for tooling around on). When I was 16 I bought a brand new Kawasaki KLR 650. I wasn't a huge fan of it, it was wayyy to heavy for anything off-road. Before going to college I sold the KLR 650, and a couple years into college I bought another XT350 that I got a good deal on.

Overall I really love the XT350's for what i use them for.

    Brings back memories, fun times.
