Two big wins and our RPI skyrocketed!

Just over a week ago ISU WBB was written off for dead, not included in ESPN Bracketology, 0-5 in the conference, and a scary RPI of #92. But Cyclone Nation remained steadfast in supporting Our Team, and the Sisters in Cardinal and Gold knew they had it in them to make the post-season. They dug deep and did it the Iowa State way. And here is what happened:

    * We beat Texas Tech (RPI #45) and we jumped 13 spots up to #79.

    * We beat Kansas State (RPI #10, Strength of Schedule #3) and we jumped up another 20 spots to #59.

Wow, we're #59 now, and playing the #9 team next, with more huge opportunities coming to move up the ladder. We probably need 8 conference wins and an RPI in the 40s to make the NCAAs. Let's hope Brynn comes back healthy and the shots keep falling for Loz and Moody.

    Hope prevails. Go Cyclones

Do you mean 8 conf wins total or 8 more wins. Is the Big 12 that strong that an 8-10 team will make the dance?

"There are five real good recruits in the state. We got three of them. One couldn’t get into school, and the other went to (the University of) Iowa...which is about the same thing." - Coach Johnny Orr

I believe the conference is strong enough that even an 8-10 team will make the NCAA because the overall RPI of the conference is #1 and Hilton is a host site. ESPN Bracketology right now has 8 Big 12 teams slotted in the tourney (everybody except ISU and Mizzou). There have been seasons in the past where Big 12 teams with .500 and sub-.500 records have made it in.

But we can erase all doubt and finish 9-9 or 10-8 to be a lock. I don't think any Big 12 team with an above .500 conference record has ever been left out of the NCAAs.

Our remaining schedule looks like this, and I think we can get to 8 wins total, or more....

@ TAMU rematch, L, but we'll make it closer than last time
    OK-St W
    Texas rematch definite W
    @ Mizzou W
    @ TTech W, maybe a L because they'll be mad at us
    Kansas rematch W
    OU rematch W
    Mizzou W
    @ OK-St probably a W but maybe tough L
K-State rematch at home, tough W, they'll be mad
    @ Baylor L

An 8-10 team already scheduled to host rounds 1&2 may get the benefit of the doubt. Money talks.

"Will"? Not necessarily. But "could," yes.

I don't know if the selection committee even knows who is hosting when they pick the 64. (They obviously know, of course, but I mean they may not have the sites in hand when they pick.) They of course have the sites when the time comes to seed the schools.

Re: Two big wins and our RPI skyrocketed!

BF has said he thinks an 8-10 team gets in.

Last year there were a couple traditional powers with down seasons that were hosts and left out, so I don't think being a host helps our chances much. But, given how much they care about attendance.....it doesn't hurt.

Let's see how the season pans out. I think 9-9 this year is probably a lock.

And, as always, the Big 12 tourney could help things too. What is going to hurt us, is our non-con. Teams that are usually good wins, Iowa, UNI, aren't. And losses to Michigan and Penn St., while do not hurt, would have really really helped big.

Re: Two big wins and our RPI skyrocketed!

RPI is up and Poppens is number 6 in the country in rebounds but little else in team/ind. stats for us. Iowa State is at 22 in three pointer perscentage, too. Six foot Julie Wojta, Green Bay Foward/Guard, Nebraska's Hooper and a couple of Iowa players are in the top fifty for teams I sort of follow.

Fun to look some of the stats overall for instance comparing Stanford and UConn. Nnemkadi Ogwumike and Chiney Ogwumike are forces for Stanford whereas UConn has a couple low in individual stats, but as a team are powerful (scoring margin).
