Twister Sister Summary - Ladies win again!

I hope after this game…if they hadn’t already…teams will realize that this Iowa State squad can play with anyone in the conference (exclude the ATM abnormality). I’m going to say it right here…amazing stat of the night. ISU held KSU to 21 points in the second half. That is amazing defense. Then you add to it…our sisters poured in 39 points of their own. That’s called owning the half. Way to go ladies! HUGE win. We are now talking about a winning streak here folks. Love it.

The first half was a bit streaky as ISU had more than their share of turnovers. Actually KSU had quite a few too, but put together a run at the end of the half to pull away to a 36-27 lead. The load was carried by Pop when we needed it. There were some nice shots by Loz mixed in, but the first half was about the fiery red head. It’s scary to think that she is only a junior. She is the heart and soul of this team and does whatever is needed to make us successful. It was the ending of the first half that made you wonder if the rest of the gals would show up as a supporting cast or not. The other key was going to be cutting down on the turnover. Those 10 in this first stanza are just not acceptable if you want to win.

The second half was something else all together. The first part of this writeup gave you some clue to that. It just took a couple of minutes to get it going. The half started off much how the first half ended…a missed three and a turnover. Ugh. And then it started. A 3 by Moody. It was a close game again at 6 points. It stayed a bit rough for the next few minutes as KSU would get a couple of points, our ladies would turn it over, and so forth. Then another three..this time by Prins and it was a 5 point game. The great equalizer was at work here. Pop again took this team on her back and demanded the ball and she cashed it in. The game was tied at the 10 minute mark at 44. It got ugly for KSU from here on out. One VERY exciting, an unusual series saw our ladies in red pull down FOUR offensive rebound on one possession. Yes, we had two of those shots blocked, but we were hustling! Yes, Ms. Poppens was in the middle of it all and ended up scoring at the end of the flurry. Pop would then put the sisters up for good. Separation occurred when Loz hit a pair of threes. While our ladies were scoring, KSU was dying by the three.

Second amazing stat of the game? The ladies hit their free throws down the stretch. KSU would pull within five after being down nine and free throws sealed up the win 66-57.

Keep in mind this was a team who had three players scoring in double figures in Big 12 play. Chambers (16) was held to 6 on the eveing and the ladies obviously were willing to let Childs do some scoring as she picked up 22 (ave 15).

Players of the game? Yes Players. Pop. 23 points and 9 boards. She carried us (didn’t I say that already?). Loz. 15 points and 6 boards for the shortest player out there. She gave us some key 3’s. Moody…yes Moody. 15 points and 6 boards. Too many turnovers but right now I don’t care! Great game ladies!
We outrebounded KSU 38-25 and made 10 of 14 free throws while they only attempted 9.

This was a great signature win. How about victories over two ranked squads to show progress? Next up…the rematch with ATM.

Thanks for the recap. Hate when games dont have streaming. Anyone know why Brynn didnt play?

Think the team is really starting to gel now. Some tough ones to come. Keep up the hard work ladies.

Just realized losing Loz and Cole means we will have a very young guard court next year.

I may be a bit remiss not mentioning players individually for their defensive play. I see this as a total team effort when you do what the sisters did in the second half. We know we have some real stoppers on this team, but didnt want to take away from the overall effort

Been thinking about that. Guards court will two freshmen and one sophomore unless you count Harris and/or Brynn. Hope we get the Vanloo gal to come with the other freshmen. Wonder if there is any chance at a JC guard to add for depth?

Well, Harris will be Junior, and Brynn and Nikki will be sophomores. Guessing Bingley and the Kidd will be competing for the 2 spot with Harris. Who knows, maybe BF and team will work with Hallie to move her more to the 3 over the summer.

I'd guess no. Assuming Vanloo comes, we'll be swimming in backcourt talent. There will be a big adjustment period for the freshmen, but that'd be true with a juco as well. I could maybe see a juco post entering with the 2013 class. (or even 2012, especially if they have three years left).

    Poppens = Red-Haired Warrior

This was my nickname for her after watching the ISU-Texas game in Hilton last year.

Watching from a courtside corner of the court, she showed how hard-nosed she was

and helped the team to an overtime win. She flat-out performs every night. The

younger players need to emulate this. I believe we are seeing improvement.

    Go Cyclones.

I still don't see Hallie as a long-term 3. I know a lot of people here do. It's nice for stretches here and there, but it kills our post depth.

I'm thinking Moody/Vanloo at 1, Kidd/Bingley at 2, and Williamson/Harris at 3. Of course, Moody and/or Vanloo could also play 2, Kidd and Bingley could play any guard position, and Brynn/Harris could also play 2. Six guards at three positions is pretty good depth, especially with four of them being combo guards.
